The University of Utah volleyball team opens its season by hosting UC Davis and Utah State this weekend at the Utah Classic in Crimson Court. The Utes open against UC Davis Friday at 7 p.m., then take on Utah State Saturday at 7 p.m.
Dan Clayton, the voice of Utah Volleyball, will have the play-by-play call for both of the Utes' matches. They can be accessed by clicking the `Ute TV (Live Video Streaming)' link under the `Multimedia' tab on the volleyball web page at utahutes.com. Live stats for all three matches of the event (including Saturday's 1 p.m. matchup between Utah State and UC Davis) can be found at utahutes.com as well.
Utah ended its 2009 season 17-12 overall and finished in a third-place tie with New Mexico with a 10-6 record in the Mountain West Conference.
Utah Picked Second in MWC Poll: The Utes were selected to finish second in the MWC in the 2010 Preseason Coaches Poll, voted on by a panel including the nine conference head coaches and members of the media.
Utes Receiving Votes: Utah received 34 votes in the first AVCA Preseason Poll of the season, released Aug. 18. MWC preseason favorite Colorado State was ranked 17th while San Diego State received 14 votes. Non-conference opponents appearing in the poll were Michigan (No. 12), San Diego (No. 22), Oklahoma (69 votes) and Missouri State (2 votes).
Protecting Crimson Court: The Utes were 11-3 at Crimson Court in 2009 and are now 23-4 at home since 2008. Utah was 6-2 in home matches against conference foes last season.
Preseason All-MWC Utes: Utah senior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak (Aurora, Ill.) and senior libero Keisha Fisher (Ririe, Idaho) were named to the Preseason All-MWC Team.
