Season Tickets and Scarf Campaign
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (0-4) plays its first home games this weekend as Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's College visit Ute Field. The Utes kick off against the LMU Lions (2-1-0) Friday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m., then take on the Gaels (2-0-0) at 1 p.m., Sunday.
The All-Time Series...
Utah holds an 0-1-2 all-time record against LMU. Friday will mark the first of their meetings in Salt Lake City. The Utes and Lions met last year on a neutral field in Los Angeles, playing to a 2-2 draw.
Utah and Saint Mary's have clashed twice before, splitting the series 1-1-0, with each team capturing a win on each other's home field. In their last meeting, Utah captured a 2-0 road win on the Gaels' pitch in 2003. The previous contest resulted in a 2-1 overtime win for SMC at Ute Field in 2002.
Scouting This Week's Opposition...
Loyola Marymount Lions
After falling at California in its season opener, LMU has reeled off two straight wins, topping Denver at home by a 2-1 score and going on the road to beat Cal State Bakersfield, 3-1.
Tawni Martino leads the Lions with three goals, netting both LMU scores against Denver and logging the third against Bakersfield. Nickey Ha has accounted for two goals, while Jordan Nelson added another. Four different Lions have been credited with an assist this season.
In goal for LMU is redshirt freshman Brittany Jagger, who has accounted for 11 saves and a .733 save percentage in her first season between the pipes.
LMU is coached by Joe Mallia, who now owns a 35-19-6 record in his fourth season at the Lion helm.
Saint Mary's College Gaels
Saint Mary's College has won its first two games of the season, defeating Nevada, 1-0, and North Florida, 4-3, both at home in Moraga, Calif. Before Sunday's contest at Ute Field, the Gaels will visit Weber State Friday afternoon in Ogden, Utah.
SMC's leading goal scorer is Alyssa Doniak, who scored the game-winner against Nevada and netted a second goal against North Florida. She has also added an assist, bringing her season total to five points. Three other Gaels have scored this year, including Jordan Marada, Christina Tognetti and Melinda Madden, who hit the game-winning strike in overtime against UNF.
In goal for Saint Mary's is Sarah Peters, who has made four saves and logged one shutout in the first two games of the season.
SMC is led by Kai Edwards, who holds an 11-11-0 record in his second season with the Gaels.
Turpen Improving in the Net...
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen is averaging more than five saves per contest, ranking among the top netminders in the Mountain West Conference. Utah's coaches have lauded her improvement, citing her organization and leadership of the defense and her increased confidence in shot-stopping. Despite the team's current record, Turpen's efforts have kept the Utes alive in every game with three of their four losses coming by a one-goal margin.
Fresh Faces on the Scoresheet...
Freshman forward Lexi Krantz was credited with the assist on Dalley's goal, getting on the scoresheet in her collegiate debut. Four other true freshmen have appeared in games for Utah this year, including Percie Allen, Jen Ericson, Stacy Fujikuni, Leslie Muirhead and Harley Spier.
Additionally, redshirt sophomore Kellie Woodfield has returned to the lineup after missing most of last year with a foot injury.
Last Time Out...
Utah lost both of its games at the Georgia Nike Invitational last weekend, falling to the host Bulldogs by a 3-0 score, then dropping a 1-0 decision to UNC Greensboro. Utah had several scoring opportunities in both games, but good goalkeeping by the opposition, combined with some significantly bad luck, kept the Utes off the scoreboard.
Utah's Mountain West Conference History...
Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the MWC. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU.
Utah's next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes' trophy case at season's end.
In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title.
The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1.
With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC's history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
