2010 Northwestern Challenge Notes ![]()
The University of Utah volleyball team hits the road for the first time this season at the Northwestern Challenge this weekend. The Utes' first match in Evanston, Ill., will be against Morehead State, Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 10 a.m., as the Utes take on Ole Miss, followed by host Northwestern at 7 p.m. CT.

Road Openers: The Utes are 14-21 during the program's 35 seasons in the first match away from home, including a 9-11 record under Launiere.
Homecoming for Bartkowiak: Senior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak (Aurora, Ill.) will return to her home area this weekend as the Utes travel to Evanston, Ill., another Chicago suburb, for the Northwestern Challenge.
Dishing It Out: Utah setters Stephanie Neeley (Saugus, Calif.) and McKenzie Odale (Star, Idaho) are tied ninth in the MWC with a 5.67 assist-per-set average after the first three matches of the season.
Neeley dished out a season-high 30 assists against Utah Valley. She had 15 assists against UC Davis then tied for the team-high in helpers with a double-double performance against Utah State, including 23 assists and 15 digs. This was Neeley's 15th career double and first such performance this season.
Odale coordinated the Ute attack with 29 assists against UC Davis then added 23 more against Utah State.
Series History
Morehead State Series: The Utes won the only other meeting with Morehead State, which was the first match of the NIVC Championship on Dec. 3, 1993 in Kansas City, Mo. The Utes swept the Eagles, 3-0.
Ole Miss Series: This will be the first meeting between Utah and Mississippi. The Utes are 2-11 all-time against teams from the Southeastern Conference.
Northwestern Series: This will be the first meeting between Utah and Northwestern. The Utes own a 6-12 all-time mark against Big Ten Conference schools.
Scouting the Opponents
Morehead St. (2-1) ? Sept. 3 ? 4:30 p.m. CT: Morehead State's volleyball team went 2-1 at the Georgia State Invitational. The Eagles finished the event with a 3-0 victory over the North Florida Ospreys on Saturday.
Senior Holly Evans and junior Liz Schuler were named to the All-Tournament Team. Evans leads the way with 2.92 kills per set and a .342 hitting percentage. Shuler is averaging 6.42 digs per set after three matches this season.
Head coach Jaime Gordon is now in his eighth year at the helm for the Eagles.
Ole Miss (2-1) ? Sept. 4 ? 10 a.m. CT: Ole Miss opened its season with three matches at the Rice Invitational and came away with a 2-1 record. After suffering a five-set loss to Texas-San Antonio and sweeping Texas Tech, the Rebels defeated host Rice, 3-0, to close out the tournament and claim the championship.
Regina Thomas was named tournament MVP, while Miranda Kitts and Allegra Wells joined her on the all-tournament team.
Head coach Joe Getzin is in his ninth season in Oxford.
Northwestern (2-0) ? Sept. 4 ? 7 p.m. CT: Northwestern swept Loyola University Chicago and Illinois-Chicago to claim the Chicagoland Classic title.
Sabel Moffett earned tournament MVP honors, while Naomi Johnson and Elyse Glab were named to the all-tournament team.
Moffett averaged 3.17 kills and 2.33 blocks per set during the tournament. Johnson had 2.83 kills with 1.17 blocks per set and Glab distributed 11.50 assists per set.
Head coach Keylor Chan is in his 11th season in Evanston.
