SALT LAKE CITY - Chris Kupets poured in 20 points and pulled down a career-high six rebounds to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team (11-15, 4-8 MWC) to an 80-70 win over Wyoming (9-17, 2-10 MWC) in a Mountain West Conference game Wednesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes shot 52.0% (26-of-50) from the floor as a team, while the Cowboys shot 42.2% (28-of-66). Utah made 45.5% (5-of-11) from 3-point range while Wyoming was limited to a 31.6% (6-of-19). Utah committed 11 turnovers but was able to force 13 Wyoming turnovers. The Utes got off to an impressive start by making nine of its first 15 shots at the start of the game and three of its first four 3-point shots.
Kupets earned his 20 points after connecting on six of his 11 shots, including a 7-of-9 effort from the free throw line. It was his third time with 20 or more points this season and his second time in MWC play. Kupets also made a contribution on the glass with a career-high six rebounds.
Will Clyburn was 7-of-11 from the floor with 19 points connected on four of his first five shots from the field, including his first two three-point shots. Clyburn also chipped in six rebounds. Josh Watkins also put up a 19-point effort after hitting six of his 12 attempts. Watkins connected on six of his seven foul shots.
J.J. O'Brien turned in his fifth-double-digit game, and second straight, with 10 points after making three of his four shots from the floor. He also collected five rebounds.
David Foster collected a career-high 13 rebounds. With three blocks against the Cowboys, Foster's career mark climbed to 199, just six rejections from tying Luke Nevill's Utah career record of 205 from 2005-09.
There were six ties early in the first half before the Utes pieced together a 6-2 stretch to assume a 22-18 lead. Utah led by as many as six points on a pair of occasions. Wyoming responded with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to regain the lead at 32-27. Utah ended the half on a 7-0 run to head to locker room with a 34-32 advantage. Kupets was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in the half with a game-high 12 points. Clyburn joined Kupets in double-digit points with 10 after shooting 4-for-6. The Utes posted a 66.7% (4-of-6) from 3-point territory and managed a 56.0% (14-of-25) while holding Wyoming to a 48.8% clip (14-of-29).
Utah inched its lead to four points at 45-41 after the under-16-minute media timeout in the second half. Wyoming used a 7-2 spurt to take a 48-47 lead with 12:43 remaining. The teams traded the advantage three more times before Utah took nine of the next 11 points to take a 66-60 edge to equal what was their largest lead of the contest to that point. The Utes then went on to extend their lead to as many as 10 points en route to an 80-70 victory.
Wyoming was led by Desmar Jackson, who totaled 17 points on a 7-of-15 shooting effort. Amath M'Baye turned in a team-high 10 rebounds for the Cowboys.
The Utes travel to New Mexico on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at `The Pit'.
