SALT LAKE CITY - Junior wing Will Clyburn hit the go-ahead free throw with 9.5 seconds remaining and center David Foster's 207th career block clinched the victory as the University of Utah men's basketball team (13-15, 6-8 MWC) defeated TCU (10-19, 1-13 MWC) for its third consecutive win, 50-48, in a Mountain West Conference game Tuesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
With three blocks against the Horned Frogs, Foster broke Luke Nevill's school record with 207 over his career. He now has 87 rejections this season.
Junior point guard Josh "Jiggy" Watkins tied for game-high honors with 14 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. The New York, N.Y., native has reached double-digits in points in 21 of 28 Utah's games this season.
J.J. O'Brien had a strong second half, pouring in 10 points with a 4-of-5 effort from the foul line. The freshman from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., totaled 13 points in the game and has been in double-figures in points six times this season.
Chris Hines contributed eight points and established a new career high with five rebounds, while Clyburn added seven points, including a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line, to go along with five rebounds.
TCU scored the first basket of the game, but Utah fought back with a 5-0 run and the Utes pushed their lead to eight points at 14-6 after a 9-2 spurt. TCU charged back to take the lead by piecing together a 14-5 run for a 20-19 halftime advantage. The point totals for both teams set a season-low mark. Utah won the turnover battle in the opening half, committing only four while forcing five by TCU. Watkins hit three of his six field goal attempts for a team-high seven points. Clyburn and Hines both corralled four rebounds apiece to lead the Utes on the glass.
The Utes started strong by scoring the first five points of the second half, which turned out to feature plenty of runs by both teams. The Horned Frogs pushed back on the Utes' initial surge by scoring seven of the next nine points to regain the lead at 27-26. Utah once again took five consecutive points to claim a 31-27 advantage, but TCU came right back with a 6-0 streak for a 33-31 lead. The Utes tied the game back up six more times before a pair of Clyburn free throws gave Utah a 48-46 edge. A lay-in by TCU's Nikola Cerina on the following possession forced the ninth tie of the half (48-48) before a Clyburn free throw on the front end of the double bonus situation gave Utah a 49-48 lead with 9.5 seconds remaining. Foster then blocked Hank Thorns' lay-in attempt with 1.6 seconds left to clinch the win.
TCU was led by a game-high-tying 14 points by Thorns, who also dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.
After having a bye this weekend, the Utes travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for a Wednesday, March 2 game against Colorado State at Moby Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT and will be televised live on the CBS College Sports Network.
