SALT LAKE CITY - Utah head volleyball coach Beth Launiere has announced the addition of defensive specialist Candace Tufaga to the incoming recruiting class that will begin playing for the Utes in the fall of 2011.
"Candace will give us depth at the defensive specialist position," Launiere said. "We're happy to have her join our team and believe her ability and experience will help us tremendously."
Tufaga, a native of Kahuku, Hawaii, played two seasons at Sheridan College and had 2.02 kills per set last season for the Generals. In 2009, she played in 78 sets and averaged .45 service aces per set during, which ranked 41st in the nation.
Tufaga attended Kahuka High School where she lettered for four years and played a variety of positions (outside hitter, right-side hitter and defensive specialist) for head coach Uila Vendiola. Tufaga earned honorable mention all-state recognition in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons and led her team to the Oahu Interscholastic Association title in 2008.
Tufaga also played with the NorthShore Volleyball Club and the Team 808 Hawaii Volleyball Club.
Tufaga was an honor roll candidate during her four years of high school and she intends to major in pre-exercise and sport science. She is the daughter of Lima and So'o Tufaga and has three siblings: Tuika, So'o and Wes. Wes played football at Utah from 1997-2000.
