SALT LAKE CITY-The University of Utah track & field team will host the Utah Spring Classic this Friday at the McCarthey Family Track & Field. The event marks the first meet ever held at the new facility and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. MDT.
"I know our athletes are all excited to compete in the first ever meet at our new facility," said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler. "We look forward to hosting a great event the first time out so that we can build on it for years to come."
The distance events will feature senior Alyssa Abbott in the final home meet of her career. Abbott is coming off a 30th-place finish at the Stanford Invitational, where she finished two seconds shy of her personal record with a time of 16:31.54 in the 5,000m. Abbott took last week off from competing and now well rested, she looks to set a new personal record in the 1,500m at the Utah Spring Classic. Senior Kastin Frostl is also slated to compete in her final home meet. The Riverton, Utah native, originally walked on to the team and has been a solid contributor to the team in the hammer throw throughout her career.
"We have two seniors who get to compete on their home track for the first time," said Kepler. "They have put in a lot of time and effort to help our program develop and have an opportunity to build this facility. I am excited and proud for them to have this opportunity to compete at home."
Sophomore Amanda Mergaert is scheduled to compete in the distance races for the Utes. Mergaert is coming off a great 2011 indoor season where she broke her own school record in the mile three times and is looking to set a new outdoor personal record on the Utes' home track.
The throwing events will feature Anneli Stahl, who set a new personal record in the hammer throw last week at the UVU Invitational with a mark of 183-00. Nikkie Rudder is scheduled to compete in the shot put for the Utes and currently has a season-best throw of 47-2.50 that she set at the ASU Invitational.
Angela Kaplar set a season-best time of 13.99 in the 100m hurdles at last weekend's UVU Invitational and is looking to build upon that time on Friday. The sprinters group will feature Alyssa Johnson who posted a top-10 school performance in the 400m hurdles at the UVU Invitational with a time of 1:03.02.
Junior Langley Iverson will compete in the high jump. Iverson is coming off a first-place finish at the UVU Invitational and looks to clear the six foot barrier for the first time of the outdoor season. Brianna LeRoy is set to compete in multiple events after setting five personal records in the Jim Click Invitational.
"The weather forecast is not spectacular for Friday, but that's outdoor track most places in the country," stated Kepler. "We will be ready to compete and get better regardless of the conditions because everyone has to deal with them."
The hammer throw is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. MDT and will be held at the Guardsman Way Field (500 S. Guardsman Way). The pole vault will begin at 1:30 p.m. and running events will begin at 4 p.m. MDT and both will be held at the McCarthey Family Track and Field (98 S. Wasatch Drive).
