2011 Utah Spring Tournament Schedule ![]()
The University of Utah volleyball team will begin its Pac-12 Conference era by facing a rugged schedule that includes 13 matches against seven teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season and four contests against schools that advanced to the NCAA Final Four as head coach Beth Launiere announced the 2011 schedule on Thursday.
After winning six different Mountain West Conference titles (three regular season and three tournament) and amassing a 137-43 record for a .761 winning percentage in 11 seasons, Launiere and the Utes welcome the challenge of their new conference.
"It's time to get started in the much anticipated new era of Utah Athletics," Launiere said. "The Utah Volleyball program had a tremendous amount of success in the Mountain West Conference, but the Pac-12 is our home now and we need to figure out how to be successful here."
In 21 seasons as the Utah head coach, Launiere is the winningest coach in school history with a 425-238 (.641) career record.
The Utes will take on the Big Ten Conference's Northwestern, who reached the second round of the tournament last season, before Pac-12 Conference play begins. Fellow conference members Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Arizona all reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010 while Cal and Stanford both earned Final Four bids.
"The Pac-12 is arguably the best volleyball conference in the country," Launiere said. "We know we are going to have to raise the bar in every aspect of our program to compete. We're looking forward to it."
Utah will host 17 matches at Crimson Court during the 2011 regular season, including a pair of tournaments: the Utah Classic on Aug. 26-27 and the Utah Invitational on Sept. 9-10. The final match of the Utah Invite will be against BYU at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10. In between the home tournaments, the Utes will take on an international team Nova KBM Maribor, Slovenia on Aug. 30.
"Utah fans, and volleyball fans in general, are in for a treat," Launiere said. "Some of the best volleyball in the country will be played at Crimson Court."
Utah's first Pac-12 match will be Sept. 13 at Colorado. First serve from Boulder is set for 7 p.m. MT.
After traveling to Stanford and Cal on Sept. 16-17, the Utes will host their first Pac-12 match at Crimson Court against Oregon State on Sept. 23.
The NCAA Tournament begins Dec. 1 with the first and second rounds. The NCAA Championship will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio Texas, Dec. 17-19.
Television coverage for selected matches will be announced at a later date.
