The University of Utah volleyball team opens its 37th season this weekend by hosting the Utah Classic at Crimson Court. The Utes open their season Friday at 7 p.m. against Weber State then will have a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon against Cal State Northridge and ending with a 7 p.m. match against Northwestern. Utah ended last season 17-14 overall and finished third in its final season of Mountain West Conference play with an 11-5 mark in league competition.
Protecting Crimson Court: Utah is 31-8 (.795) within the friendly confines of Crimson Court since 2008. The Utes' all-time home record is 276-164 (.627) since the program's inception in 1975.
For Starters: The Utes have won 10 of their last 11 home openers, including the last three. Their last loss in a home opener came to current Pac-12 rival USC in four sets on Sept. 7, 2007.
Sophomore Firepower: Utah's returning all-conference performers from last season are both sophomores. Last season's MWC Freshman of the Year, Morgan Odale (Star, Idaho), returns as Utah's top offensive option. Sophomore middle blocker Erin Redd (Spanish Fork, Utah) earned All-MWC accolades last season and finished second in the conference with a .354 hitting percentage.
Youth Movement: Utah welcomes seven new players this season, including six freshmen. The incoming freshmen class of Lea Adolph (Waltrop, Germany), Bailey Bateman (West Hooper, Utah), Shelby Dalton (Moab, Utah), Becca Fuchs (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), Chelsey Schofield (Provo, Utah), Alli Spurrier (Salt Lake City, Utah) was ranked 20th in the nation by prepvolleyball.com.
