SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-3-1) hits the road again this weekend to play in the Saint Mary's Classic Tournament in Moraga, Calif. The Utes will take on UC Riverside (3-2-1) in their first match of the tournament on Friday, Sept. 9, at 2:30 p.m. MT, then face tournament host Saint Mary's on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Utes Spark Offense in First Win of the Season...
After failing to score through the first four games of the season, Utah found its offensive rhythm against Utah Valley over the weekend, hanging three goals on the Wolverines. Senior forward Erin Dalley notched her first goal of the year, the 16th of her career and her fifth game-winner, less than 13 minutes into the game. Sophomore forward Percie Allen put away the first of her career later in the second half and senior defender Lauren Dudley buried a penalty kick late in the game for her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
Utah Continues Stout Defensive Effort...
Aside from a 4-0 shorthanded loss at BYU, the Utes have allowed only two goals in its four other games, posting two shutouts and taking two 1-0 losses. Even in the BYU game, the Utes shut the Cougars out for 55 minutes before having a defender sent off and being reduced to 10 players.
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen has racked up 17 saves through the first five games, while sophomore backup Cheyanne Mulcock has made six of her own.
Underclassmen Playing Key Roles...
With only five seniors on the roster, two of whom are inactive with injuries, the Utes are leaning heavily on underclassmen to fill some key positions. Seven different freshmen have made starts for the Utes, led by forward Katie Taylor, who has started all five games at forward or attacking midfield, and had a terrific impact against Utah Valley with a pair of assists. Avery Ford has also started every game in the midfield and on defense, while Sarah Duncan has become a staple at left back, earning a starting spot in the last four games after performing well as a substitute in the season opener. Jill Robison has made three starts at forward, Abby Groth and McKel Wall got their first career starts against Utah Valley, and Ashton Hall made an early-season start in the midfield as well.
The remaining starting spots on the young Utah team have gone to the sophomore class, highlighted by Allen, forward Jen Ericson, midfielder Allie Wisner, midfielder/defender Harley Spier and defender Jenny Hutton.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
UC Riverside Highlanders
UC Riverside enters the Saint Mary's Classic after winning three of its last four games, including a 2-0 win against Southern Utah on Sunday. The Highlanders also have wins over Mississippi State, 3-0, and a double-overtime win against San Jose State. A second-half penalty kick gave them the only loss in that stretch, a 1-0 defeat against Michigan.
UCR is led offensively by Kayde Hensley, who has notched three goals, including a pair of game-winners, on 12 shots. She is the only multiple-goal scorer for the Highlanders, who have seen five other players also find the back of the net. Kristy Adcock leads the team with two assists, while three others have one each.
In goal for UCR, Jessica Olafsen has played in four games, posting a 3-1-0 record with two shutouts. She has made 24 saves and allowed just two goals for a 0.48 goals-against-average and a .923 save percentage. Saint Mary's Gaels
Saint Mary's carries a 3-1-1 record into the week, with all three victories coming at home. The Gaels have scored three goals in each of their wins, defeating George Washington 3-0, Northwestern, 3-2, and Cal Poly, 3-1, on Sunday. They will take on Hawai'i on Tuesday, Sept. 6, before hosting Virginia Commonwealth in the first game of the Saint Mary's Classic on Friday.
The SMC offense is led by Jordan Marada, who has notched three goals and three assists for nine points, and Sara Ives, who has also scored three goals. Lauren McQuiston and Daelyn Paul have each contributed a pair of assists as well.
Defensively, Kate Brenot has played almost all of the Gaels' minutes in goal, surrendering five goals and making 25 saves for a GAA of 1.20 and a .833 save percentage.
Saint Mary's is coached by Kai Edwards, who owns a record of 20-19-5 in three years directing the Gaels.
The All-Time Series...
Friday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between Utah and UC Riverside in women's soccer. Against Saint Mary's, Utah is 1-2-0 all-time, but its win in the series did come on the Gaels' home field, a 2-0 shutout victory in 2003. The last time the two squads faced off was in Salt Lake City last season, when Saint Mary's grabbed its own 2-0 win on the Utes' home turf.
Utah's Last Outing...
Utah picked up its first win of the season Sunday with a 3-0 victory over in-state foe Utah Valley University (1-4-0). The Utes earned their second shutout of the season while scoring their first three goals of the year.
Dalley lit up the scoreboard in the 13th minute as she buried a header from about eight yards out, after Taylor dropped a well-placed through-ball into the UVU penalty box. The goal was Dalley's 16th career score, her fifth game-winner, and the first career assist and point for Taylor.
The Utes made it 2-0 in the 39th minute as Allen knocked home her first career goal. Allen, a converted defender, made a run to the near post and got on the end of a cross from Robison, hitting a right-footed one-time volley for the game's second goal. It was Robison's first career assist and point, while Taylor was credited with her second assist of the game, after playing the ball to Robison.
Utah extended the score line to 3-0 in the 83rd minute as sophomore forward Jen Ericson was tackled in the UVU penalty box, earning the first penalty kick of the year for the Utes. Senior defender Lauren Dudley opted to take the PK, calmly tucking it into the left side for her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career.
Turpen started the game and made two saves, then was relieved at halftime by Mulcock, who made a pair of second-half saves to preserve the combined shutout. On the Utah Valley end, Lauren Sack played the first half and made one save while allowing two goals. She was then was replaced by Jadeshia Colebrook at halftime, who made four saves while giving up one goal on the Ute penalty.
Utah outshot the Wolverines, 16-12 overall, with shots on goal going 8-4 in favor of the Utes. UVU earned four corner kicks to Utah's 2, while fouls went 12-7 against the Utes.
Porter Named Team Captain...
Utah will be captained by the aforementioned senior center back Lauren Porter. A four-year starter with a great academic record as well, Porter will bring leadership on and off the field for the Utes. She is currently out with a knee injury suffered at BYU, but is hopeful for a return this season.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2.
