SALT LAKE CITY- After taking two weeks off, the University of Utah women's track and field team hits the road this week to compete at the Boise State Open. The Utes are slated to begin competing Friday at 10:30 a.m. MDT at the Jackson Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
"Other than the throwers this is the opening meet of the 2012 season," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We have had some very good workouts and time trials in the last two weeks, but it is virtually impossible to simulate competition at practice. As a coaching staff we will be focused on effort and doing the little things that we can build upon as we move forward. We want to see athletes who are mentally engaged from start to finish. We want to see our athletes communicating and helping each other out during the meet. Those are the things we can control and that need our attention."
Coming off a dominating performance on Jan. 6 at the BYU Invitational, the Utah throws group looks to continue its success. Junior Anneli Stahl is expected to be among the elite throwers in the Pac-12 Conference. Stahl and junior Cynthia Sanchez will lead the Utes in the weight throw event.
In the multi-events, senior Brianna LeRoy will make her season debut. In 2011, LeRoy earned second place in the pentathlon with a career-best 3,654 points at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships.
The running events will feature junior Angela Kaplar in the hurdles. During the 2011 indoor season, Kaplar set school records in both the 55m and 60m hurdle events.
Losing only one senior to graduation in 2011, the Utes enter this season with a strong core group that will pave the way in the inaugural Pac-12 Conference season. The Utah sprints, jumps, and distance groups will all make their season debut on Friday.
"Every meet is different and we certainly believe we could win some events," Kepler said. "However, we need to focus more on the process of doing things the right way, rather than winning or hitting specific time or mark in the first meet of the season. We will put more emphasis on outcomes later."
At the 2011 Boise State Open, the Utes claimed first place in four events. Kaplar posted a school-record performance to win the 60m hurdles. Alyssa Abbott returned from injury to earn first place in the 3000m race. Amanda Mergaert clocked a personal-best time in the 800m to win the event, and Iverson finished first in the high jump.
