SALT LAKE CITY- After winning five event titles last weekend at the Boise State Open, the University of Utah women's track and field team will return to Idaho to compete at the Mountain States Games. The Utes will start competition at 12:00 p.m. MT on Friday at the Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
"Everyone is going to Idaho this weekend," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We need to continue to improve across the board in all of our events. Last week, we had some very good performances, but we also had some things that didn't go very well. I expect another week of practice and getting back into competition to clean that up, so we can move forward."
Coming off a great performance at the Boise State Open, freshman Andrea Chavez will lead the Utes in the distance events. In her first collegiate meet, Chavez clocked the second fastest mile time in school history.
After a solid performance last week, senior Brianna LeRoy looks to win the pentathlon at the Mountain States Games.
In the hurdle events, Angela Kaplar is looking to improve on her fifth-place performance at the Boise State Open. Kaplar holds the school hurdles record and is determined to establish herself among the elite athletes in the Pac-12 Conference.
At the 2011 Mountain States Games, the Utes dominated the throwing events. In both the shot put and weight throw, the Utes had four student-athletes finish in the top-10 spots. With all of the throwers returning this week, the Utes have high expectations to finish in the top spot of the throwing events.
