SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team gets set to make its indoor season debut on Friday at the BYU Invitational. The Utes are slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. MDT in Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
The Utes will primarily compete in the throwing competitions with several freshmen scheduled to compete in running events.
"This is a very low key meet for everyone," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "It is an opportunity to find out where some of our athletes are early in the season. For the freshmen it will be their first collegiate competition and an opportunity to get used to the new level without a lot of pressure."
Leading the way for the Utes will be veterans Nikkie Rudder and Cynthia Sanchez. Both had great seasons in 2011 and have improved in the offseason to become elite throwers in the Pac-12 Conference.
"We are ahead of where we were a year ago, which shows growth and maturity,"Kepler said. "We have focused a lot on trying to get back to where we ended the outdoor season last spring and then move forward from there."
"At the BYU Invitational, I am looking to see everyone compete hard," Kepler said. "We want to see the freshmen have a positive experience and gain some confidence."
