SALT LAKE CITY- Following a soggy but successful meet at the Aztec Invitational, the University of Utah women's track and field team heads to the desert on Friday to compete at the Arizona State Invitational. The action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. MST at Sun Angel Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
"Our focus at meets early in the season is to build strength and get comfortable with competing on a bigger track," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We will get sharper as the season progresses. We have a lot of veterans on this team that understand where they need to be. What we are trying to accomplish in March is different from April, May and June. Therefore, several athletes will be competing in a variety of events this weekend to help them better prepare for meets later in the season."
Getting the action underway on Friday will be junior Angela Kaplar in the 100m hurdles. Kaplar enters the race coming off a fourth-place performance at the Aztec Invitational. In that same race, Kaplar got off to a great start, but showed signs of fatigue with the longer distance compared with the indoor 60m hurdles. This weekend, Kaplar looks to improve on her performance and establish herself as a top competitor in the Pac-12 Conference.
The field events will feature multiple athletes who are anxious to make their season debuts. Because of poor weather conditions that led to the early cancellation of the Aztec Invitational, several Utah athletes were unable to compete. With hot weather projected in the forecast, the Utah throwers are anxious to compete in the hammer, discus, and shot put events.
"This meet is typically a very good early season meet," Kepler said. "The numbers of teams competing are not overwhelming like at the Stanford Invitational or Mt. Sac Relays, but many of the athletes are trying to accomplish similar training effects, which usually lends to some really good events."
