This Weekend's Action
The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-1) hosts BYU (2-0) in the annual Deseret Duel Rivalry Series match-up, Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Network (see info below). In its first match of the week, Utah won its home opener against Southern Utah, 4-0.
The Deseret Duel Rivalry Series
Tuesday night's matchup between Utah and BYU will mark the first contest of the 2012-13 Deseret First Duel rivalry series. The rivalry series includes each sport where Utah and BYU compete head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel uses a system that awards points to the winner of each competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner in each sport. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. A granite traveling trophy is awarded to the overall series champion each year.
The Utah women's soccer team (1-1) captured its home opener and first win of the season at Ute Field with a 4-0 shutout victory against Southern Utah (0-2). Sophomore midfielder Avery Ford scored the game-winning goal while freshman forward Baylee Nielsen netted a pair of goals and logged an assist. All four Ute goals came in the second half. Ute Offense Comes Alive in 4-0 Victory Over Southern Utah
Thursday night's victory against Southern Utah marked the Utes' most prolific offensive output in more than two years. The last time Utah netted four or more goals in a single game was on Aug. 21, 2009, when they defeated Utah Valley by a 6-0 margin. Utah out-shot the Thunderbirds 33-6 for the game, putting 16 shots on goal to SUU's one.
Three Utes Strike Gold Against Thunderbirds
Utah's four goals against SUU came from three different players, with sophomore midfielder Avery Ford scored the first goal and ultimate game winner. It was Avery's second career goal, both of which have been game-winning strikes. Junior midfielder Harley Spier put away the second goal of the game and the fourth of her career. Freshman forward Baylee Nielsen then scored twice, tallying the first and second goals of her career.
Nielsen Posts Best Game By A Ute Freshman Since 2007
With a pair of goals against SUU, Nielsen becomes the first true freshman at Utah to score multiple goals in a game since Lauren Hair scored two against Utah Valley on Oct. 3, 2007. It was also the first time that any Ute logged a multiple-goal game since Erin Dalley netted two goals at TCU on Oct. 16, 2010.
Nielsen also added an assist to total five points in the match, the most points in a single game by a Utah freshman since Hair did the same in the aforementioned match against Utah Valley. It was also the most points in a game by any Ute since Kelly Isleib tallied five against UVU on Aug. 21, 2009.
Mulcock Picks Up First Career Solo Shutout
Junior Cheyanne Mulcock was only tested once against Southern Utah, but was up to the task as she secured her first career solo shutout. Mulcock combined with Hannah Turpen to record three shutouts last season.
Mulcock did not allow a single goal in five appearances in 2011. She has now allowed just one goal in her last seven games going back to last season, posting a goals-against-average of just 0.23 with a .947 save percentage. For her career, Mulcock has allowed just four goals in 10 games. Her career GAA stands at 0.59 to go with a .882 save percentage.
Backing up Mulcock is redshirt freshman Lindsey Luke, a transfer from Wake Forest.

Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
BYU Cougars
BYU posted a 1-0 win on the road at Arizona on Thursday. Sophomore Jaiden Thornock scored the game's only goal in the third minute of play and has now scored the game-winning goal in both of the Cougars victories this season.
BYU took a 3-2 overtime victory in its season-opener at UC Irvine on Friday. Thornock scored the golden goal in overtime. The Cougars held a 2-0 lead on goals from junior Niki Fernandes and freshman Michelle Murphy. However they conceeded a pair of goals in the second half, including a penalty kick in the 72nd minute and the equalizer in the last minute of regulation, which forced overtime.
BYU's top returning offensive player is Carlee Payne Holmoe, who posted five goals and nine assists for 19 points last year. She finished Friday's game with two shots.
In goal for BYU in both games has been junior Erika Owens, who has tallied nine saves and allowed two goals. Owens' previous career action consisted of just two games in 2009, as she totaled two saves.
The Cougars are coached by Jennifer Rockwood, now in her 17th season as BYU's head coach. Rockwood has amassed a 275-82-29 record at the helm.
Series History
BYU is one of the most-often faced teams in the Utes' history. Utah holds a 5-18-1 record against the Cougars, with a 2-8 mark at home. BYU has won the last four meetings in the series, with three of four by one-goal margins. In last year's match in Provo, the score was tied at 0-0 midway through the second half, before a Ute defender recieved her second yellow card and was dismissed from the game. BYU went on to capture a 4-0 win.
