SALT LAKE CITY - The Runnin' Utes started fast and finished fast Friday night, racing by UC Davis, 94-60, at the Huntsman Center.
Sophomore guard Brandon Taylor had a game-high 21 points, making 4-of-6 three-pointers, to equal his career best. Senior forward Renan Lenz had a career-high 20 points, while sophomore forward Jordan Loveridge had a double-double with a career-best 15 rebounds and 11 points to help Utah get off to a 2-0 start. Delon Wright was the fourth Runnin' Ute in double-figures with 12 points and a game-high six assists.
Utah shot 60 percent from the field, staying above 56 percent in both halves, while holding the Aggies to 33 percent. Utah also had a 49-27 edge on the boards and enjoyed a 50-30 edge on points in the paint.
Brynton Lemar scored 14 points while Josh Ritchart and Corey Hawkins added 11 apiece to lead the Aggies (1-2).
With the game tied 2-2, Utah went on a 13-0 run over the next two minutes to open up a 15-2 lead at the 15:45 mark. Taylor scored eight points during that stretch and did a little bit of everything, hitting a three and slashing to the paint for a three-point play to keep the Aggies defense off-balance.
UC Davis regained some composure on offense and cut the Utes' lead to 17-13 on a tip-in basket by Georgi Funtarov. Starting with a Hawkins jumper, the Aggies made four consecutive baskets to get back into the game.
It wasn't enough with Utah cutting to the basket at will. The Utes turned many possessions into layups to hold UC Davis at arm's length in the first half. Wright scored a layup to stop the Aggie run and start another spurt for the Utes. Jeremy Olsen capped the 13-4 run with a pair of free throws--giving Utah a 30-17 lead with 10:31 left before halftime.
But The Aggies also had another first-half rally left in them. UC Davis started fighting its way back into the game when three different Utah starters--Wright, Loveridge and Dakarai Tucker--went to the bench after picking up two fouls.
The Aggies closed to within five with the Ute starters sidelined, making it 34-29 on a three-pointer by Ryan Sypkens. Utah slammed the door shut once again before UC Davis could complete the comeback. The Utes held the Aggies over the final 3:57 of the half and scored 11 unanswered points to take a 45-29 halftime lead.
Taylor made two more threes during that stretch and went 3-of-4 from long range in the first half, scoring 14 points in 17 minutes of play.
The only downside for Utah in the first half was nine turnovers, which led to 11 UC Davis points.
Utah also started strong after halftime, going ahead 53-33--the team's first 20 point lead--on Loveridge's first basket of the game. Loveridge, who had his sixth career double-double, scored all 11 points in the second half and also tallied five assists.
Utah committed only five turnovers in the second half, and had six blocked shots for the game, led by three from Lenz.
The Runnin' Utes put the game out of reach for good with a 16-4 run over a three and half minute stretch to build a 69-41 lead with 11:52 remaining.
