SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Getting the 2013 outdoor season underway, the University of Utah throwers posted a solid performance at the Aztec Invitational. The Utes were led by Aoife Hickey's second-place performance in the hammer throw.
"We had a decent opener today in the hammer throw," Utah assistant coach Tapio Kuusela said. "The competition was perfect for us. Our athletes were really excited for the first outdoor meet and with one meet behind us, we should start seeing continual improvements as we move forward in the season."
Hickey led the way for the Utes with a second-place performance. Setting a new personal-best, Hickey posted a mark of 188-00 feet. Finishing second for the Utes and fourth overall was senior Anneli Stahl posting her season-opener best mark of 185-11 feet. Cynthia Sanchez struggled throughout the event with consistency but managed to earn seventh with a throw of 158-00 feet.
The Utes will compete again on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. PT with the women's discus throw.
