SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team is set to host its annual Utah Spring Classic on Friday April 12. The event will be held at the state-of-the-art McCarthy Family Track and Field located at 98 S. Wasatch Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"We look forward to hosting our home meet again this year," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The inaugural event last year went extremely well and produced some outstanding performances in a variety of events. I think everyone really enjoyed the shortened format of just over two hours on the track."
The 400-meter track has nine 42-inch wide lanes with a Beynon Sports Surface--a surface also found on tracks at several other NCAA schools, among them Oregon, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Iowa. The interior of the track has a 75 x 125-yard AstroTurf field, along with areas for the throwing and jumping events. The facility is also surrounded by the terrific scenery of the Wasatch Mountains.
"We have ten seniors who will compete for the final time here at home," Kepler said. "That will be very special for all of them and everyone who has helped them throughout their time here at Utah."
"The crowd last year was amazing," Kepler continued. "We had a great deal of local supporters as well as a few alumni who traveled a good distance to be a part of our home meet. We expect another nice crowd to support our student athletes as compete on their home facility."
The Utah Spring Classic has traditionally played host to a large scale of competition. In previous seasons, the meet has attracted all of the universities and colleges in the area as well as top competition from the western region and top-individuals competing independently.
"We will be having kids 100m dash races as well as holding a Shoe Drive," Kepler said. "We always want this to be a family event. We also encourage everyone to bring any lightly worn shoes they want to donate."
Admission will be free for all fans.
Other events will include:
-Free Giveaways
-Free Cookies
-Free Balloons
-Bring slightly used shoes to be donated
-Kid's race, where kids 12 and under can come down to the track and the winner will be crowned "the fastest kid in Salt Lake"
