SALT LAKE CITY - After starting preseason training last Saturday, the University of Utah volleyball team held its first intrasquad scrimmage of preseason training this afternoon in the program's practice facility, Crimson Court.
"The nice thing about having an experienced team is that you have some pretty good practices early on and I thought that's been the case," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "The team came in prepared. We're getting through things and taking our time for the new players, but we're also doing some things really well."
The Utes welcome back six starters, who have combined to start 352 matches for Utah over their respective careers, for the upcoming 2013 campaign.
"When I look at our team position by position, I feel good about our group," Launiere said. "We don't have any numbers to look at yet and there are still a lot of things to dial in, but in terms of understanding the system and level of preparation coming in, we're in good shape."
A talented group of four incoming freshmen has joined the Ute roster for this season.
"Mainly, I want to start looking at some numbers," Launiere said. "Statistics won't mean a lot today, but it will at least give us a place to start from. We want to look at the new players and see what they do in this situation. We try to be in game-like situations as much as possible before our first match. We've gone through most of our system work as well so now we have to start making sure we're executing well."
The Utes will hold their second preseason scrimmage of preseason training camp on Friday from 3-5 p.m. in Crimson Court. The scrimmage will be open to the public.
