SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute volleyball team scrimmaged on the Jon M. Huntsman Center floor for the first time this season in preparation for its 2013 debut at the Utah Classic on Aug. 30-31.
"It went well," Utah Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "I was very pleased that the newcomers are doing a really nice job of getting up to speed so our level (of play) is going up every day. Today, we put together some different lineup options and looked at some different combinations so that's what makes these scrimmages so valuable."
Junior outside hitter Makenzie Moea'i posted a scrimmage-high 17 kills with a .306 efficiency to go with six digs. Junior Chelsey Schofield led the outside hitters with a .344 hitting percentage on 13 kills along with 10 digs. Senior Morgan Odale popped up 14 digs.
From her right-side hitter position, junior Shelby Dalton registered 13 digs and 12 kills off a .296 hitting clip.
Sophomore setter Kendall Cygan distributed 48 assists to go with 12 digs, while newcomer Kalee Kirby handed out 33 assists in addition to 12 digs.
In the back row, freshman Tess Sutton turned in a scrimmage-high 27 digs to go with 17 from junior Lea Adolph.
"It feels good to play in our new permanent home," Launiere said. "We went through our entire match warm-up today and we're being extra diligent about going through everything because it's still a new facility in some respects. We will be really comfortable for next Friday night's match (the Aug. 30 season opener against Utah State at 7 p.m. MT). We love it in here. We're so excited."
This Friday night, the current Ute roster will take on the Alumni squad in the Huntsman Center at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
The regular season starts Aug. 30-31 with the Utah Classic in the Huntsman Center. Fans can buy one ticket and receive admission for all matches on day of purchase. The tournament schedule is listed below:
