This Weekend's Action
Utah soccer looks to stay unbeaten at home when it hosts Utah State on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming Oklahoma on Sunday at noon for a contest on the Pac-12 Network.
Utes Whip Weber State
Utah soccer got a pair of goals in both halves en route to a 4-0 victory over Weber State last Sunday. Allie Wisner, Katie Taylor, Ashton Hall and Avery Ford were able to get their marks on the scoresheet for the Utes.
Kaycee Buckley picked up her first point of the season when she crossed the ball from the far side of the pitch only to have it deflected by Baylee Nielsen on to Wisner. The senior tapped it home for her third goal in as many games to give Utah an early 1-0 lead and just like last year in Ogden, her goal wound up being the eventual game-winner.
The second goal was completely created by Taylor as the junior lobbed a shot from the far right corner of the 18-yard box to the near top corner. It was Taylor's eighth goal of her Ute career and she tied Wisner and Nielsen for the team lead with three this season.
Utah's first goal of the second half occurred when Jill Robison threw the ball in along the near sideline to Hall. The forward took a couple dribbles and then ripped a shot past the Wildcat goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
The final Ute tally saw Megan Trabert keep an attempted clearance in the offensive end. The sophomore defender then fired a ball in from about 45 yards that was met by Ford. The junior headed her try home for her first goal of the season.
Cheyanne Mulcock picked up her first shutout of the season and second of her career as the Ute defense held the Wildcats to only one shot on goal. The Utes have now notched four shutouts this season.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
Utah State Aggies
Utah State was picked to finish in a tie for third in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies return 17 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that finished 13-3-6 and captured their second-straight WAC Tournament title, while reaching their second NCAA Tournament in as many years. In Utah State's seven matches, 12 different Aggies have earned a point. Juniors Taryn Rose, Lexie Morgan, Kylie Dibb and Lauren Roundy have found the back of the net, along with freshman Jessica Brooksby and seniors Jennifer Flynn, Mari Miyashiro and Shay Haddow.
Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma split a pair of games last weekend with a 1-0 win over Oral Roberts and a 5-0 setback against North Texas. Heading into last weekend, a trio of forwards, true freshmen Caren Nelson, Madison Saliba and sophomore Devin Barrett, had accounted for nearly half of OU's shots on goal so far this season. Saliba, Jamie Iurato and Daisy Cardona have each scored twice for the Sooners while Barrett is tops on the team with two assists. Goalkeeper Kassidie Stade has started seven of eight games and notched two shutouts.
The All-Time Series
Utah is 11-4 all-time vs. Utah State with a perfect 7-0-0 record against the Aggies in Salt Lake City. Despite the home success, the Utes have dropped three of the last four in this series including a 1-0 overtime loss at Rio Tinto Stadium last season.
This will be Utah's first meeting against Oklahoma but the Utes are 9-5-0 against Big 12 foes, including a 5-0-0 mark at Ute Field. The Utes topped Texas here last season 1-0, TCU on three occasions when they were rivals in the Mountain West Conference and Kansas back in 1999.
Defense Denying Opponents
Utah notched three-consecutive shutouts to open 2013 and set a new school record by keeping its opponents off the board for 397 minutes to start a season. This eclipsed the previous mark from 2005 of 321 minutes.
The Utes are allowing less than one goal per game (0.71) and have a team goals-against average of 0.65 (5 GA in 690 minutes). Utah goalkeepers have made 38 saves, tops in the Pac-12 and notched four shutouts.
In the three games she has played, goalkeeper Lindsey Luke has not allowed a goal during 310 minutes of game action. This means the sophomore leads the league in goals-against average at a perfect 0.00. This past weekend, Cheyanne Mulcock notched her first shutout of the season in a blanking of Weber State.
Robison Excels in New Role
Junior defender Jill Robison was named to CollegeSoccer360's Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 27. The Layton native was a forward last season for the Utes and started 16 games. However, she moved to a defensive role during the offseason and has flourished.
Robison has provided a steady presence in all three games this season, providing link-up play to the midfielders and forwards while adding an assist against WKU. Her sister, Jayne, is a freshman midfielder for Utah State.
Experienced Group of Utes
Utah returns every single player that scored a goal or recorded an assist in 2012. That experience should benefit the Utes throughout the season. Utah had 10 players score goals last year and 19 different Utes started in the second Pac-12 season for the club.
Ford Focused
Utah defender Avery Ford was selected by College Sports Madness to its Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. An Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection last year, she started all 19 games as part of a defense that ranked third in the Pac-12 in goals allowed per game (1.11).
Ford finished third on the squad with six points, assisting on back-to-back game-winning goals against Washington State and Washington. Ford also excelled in the classroom as she was named Honorable Mention Academic All Pac-12 and was one of 19 Utes named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll both semesters.
Utah in the Rankings
Utah is currently ranked 10th in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's Pacific Poll as of September 17. The last time Utah was ranked in the final NSCAA Poll was in 2006 when the Utes finished 23rd in the country.
Preseason Prognostication
UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 regular season Pac-12 title. The 2012 Conference runner-ups collected 117 points and 7-of-11 possible first-place votes. Four-time defending Conference champion Stanford was a close second, tallying 115 points.
Behind them were California (99), Washington (77), Arizona State (74), Oregon State (70), Washington State (70), USC (65), Utah (37), Colorado (27), Oregon (21) and Arizona (15).
