About Last Week: The Utes split their pair of matches last week, both five-set decisions. Utah fell in a five-set decision to BYU (23-25, 25-17, 14-25, 25-20, 12-15) in the Deseret First Duel on Tuesday in the Huntsman Center. The Utes had their 10-match win streak snapped, but three Utes hit double-digits in kills and five Utes registered at least 10 or more digs.
Behind the strength of a 13-2 fifth-set rally, Utah capped its non-conference regular-season schedule with a 3-2 win (13-25, 25-10, 20-25, 25-23, 15-4) at New Mexico State on Thursday in the Pan American Center.
The fifth set between the Utes and Aggies was tied twice early on but with the score even at 2-2, Utah closed on a fierce 13-2 run to clinch the match with a 15-4 win. Utah hit .571 and had 5.0 team blocks in the finale, compared to a .000 clip and 0.0 blocks for NMSU.
Utes On the Defensive: Ten of Utah's 12 opponents this season have hit under .200. Ute opponents have combined to hit .151 this season, which ranks fifth in the latest Pac-12 stats. In the latest statistical rankings released by the Pac-12, Utah was second in the conference in blocking. The Utes currently average 2.91 blocks per set, which is also seventh in the NCAA.
Redd-Brandon For the Block: Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon (Spanish Fork, Utah) came up with a team-high 1.30 blocks per set on 13 block assists in two matches last week against BYU and at New Mexico State. This season, Redd-Brandon leads the Pac-12 and is seventh in the NCAA with 1.51 blocks per set, while hitting for a team-high .343 efficiency for 2.22 kills per set. Redd-Brandon has five double-digit-kill performances this season and has had 10 or more blocks during two matches in 2013.
Redd-Brandon Climbs Utah's Career Blocks List: Redd-Brandon's name is littered throughout the Utah record book. She is already seventh in school history with 465 career total blocks (441 block assists and 24 block solos) and is eight away from tying Mikki Kane-Barton (473 from 1992-93) for sixth place in school history. Redd-Brandon is fifth on Utah's all-time career list with 441 block assists, which is eight away from catching McKelle Stilson (449 from 1998-2001) for fourth place in school history. She also has 929 career kills on the attack and is 71 away from becoming the 15th member of Utah's 1,000-kill club.
Dashing Dalton: Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton (Moab, Utah) posted a team-high 3.00 kills per set with a .308 hitting percentage last week in Utah's final two contests of the regular season: a home match against BYU and a road match at New Mexico State. This season, Dalton is posting a team-high average of 2.80 kills per set on a .321 hitting percentage and ranks eighth in the Pac-12 (69th in the NCAA) with 1.22 blocks per set. Dalton has six double-digit-kill efforts this season and 48 over her career. She has 474 career kills on a .257 hitting percentage to go with 250 total blocks.
Scolding Schofield: Junior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield (Provo, Utah) paced the Utes with 3.20 digs per set and ranked second on the squad with kills per set last week. She is second on the team with 2.80 kills and 2.55 digs per set this season. Schofield has six matches this season with 10 or more kills and 45 over her career. She also has eight double-digit-dig performances in 2013 and 37 over her career.
Morgan Can Dig It: Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale (Star, Idaho) was second on the Ute roster with 2.90 digs per set last week against BYU and at New Mexico State. Odale was also fourth on the team with 2.10 kills per set and also chipped in 0.50 blocks per set last week. She posted a match-high 21 digs in Tuesday's Deseret First Duel against BYU to go with seven kills against the Cougars. Odale hit .314 for a match-high-tying 14 kills to go with eight digs and four blocks on Thursday at New Mexico State.
Exclusive Company: Already a member of the Utah 1,000-kill and 100-ace club, Odale has pushed her career dig total to 956 and is now 44 shy of becoming the eighth member of Utah's 1,000-dig club. If she reaches that milestone, Odale will also join exclusive company as only two other players in school history have joined three of Utah's milestone clubs (Jenni Eyre (1984-87) and Lori Baird (2005-08)).
