SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer opened the 2013 home slate with an emphatic 6-2 win over Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon. Five different players scored as the Utes enjoyed their highest scoring output since the 2009 home opener.
Utah scored just four minutes into the game when Katie Rigby collected the ball in the middle of the pitch and passed it off to Ashton Hall. The junior took two dribbles and smashed home the first goal of the game and second of her career. The assist was the first point of Rigby's collegiate career
In the 18th minute, a foul set Utah up with a free kick from just inside the center circle. Megan Trabert uncorked a long ball into the penalty area that was bobbled by the SUU goalkeeper. Baylee Nielsen pounced on the ball and scored her third goal of the season for a 2-0 lead. It was the first assist as a Ute for Trabert.
Just two minutes later, Jenny Hutton sent a slicing cross into the box from the right side. Junior Katie Taylor snuck in and headed the ball home for her first goal of the season. The duo hooked up again for the fourth goal of the game in the 29th minute as Hutton's cross off a free kick was knocked home by Taylor after a scrum in the area.
In the second half, Hutton set up for a corner kick and SUU punched the ball out and away from the goalkeeper. However, Hall collected the ball and left it off for Hutton. The senior fired the ball back in from the right wing and found the back of the net for the second goal of her career.
The final Ute goal occurred in the 73rd minute when Ali Forsberg raced down the left side of the field and the endline, beating a pair of SUU defenders in the process. The sophomore slid a centering pass in front which was tapped in by Allie Wisner to culminate the day's scoring for the Utes.
The Thunderbirds would get on the board twice in the final 16 minutes on goals by Sydney Cook, and after a Utah foul, a penalty kick by Christine Meehan. Despite those goals, Cheyanne Mulcock played 70 minutes and made one save while Taylor Bolding played the final 20, also making a save.
The Utes are now 2-0 all-time against Southern Utah having topped them last season at Ute Field, 4-0.
Utah's next home game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. against UC Davis. It will be Alumni Night as well as Inter FC Club Night. The first 300 students to show their U-ID receive a free promotional item and there will be a halftime performance from the Utah drum line.
