SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Utes (10-4, 0-3 Pac-12) suffered a three-set loss (21-25, 23-25, 23-25) to the No. 14 Arizona Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Pac-12) Friday evening at Crimson Court in Salt Lake City.
The Wildcats remained undefeated in Pac-12 play, while the Utes dropped its third straight and fourth overall.
"I thought we played a very good volleyball match," said head coach Beth Launiere. "Arizona is a good team and I thought we came prepared to play, but it was a defensive battle. We held them close, but they held up. It was a game of runs and I thought overall we were put in a good position against a good-sized squad. I was pleased with the effort, that is for sure."
Arizona took the first set, 25-21, behind Madi Kingdon's eight kills and six digs from Ronni Lewis. Utah would keep the match within range, but managed to string together just three points or more on two separate occasions.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead after downing the Utes 25-23 in set two. Utah trailed 21-15 late in the set before the home squad went on a 5-0 run to pull within a point of the Wildcats. A kill from Shelby Dalton and an Arizona attack error tied the match at 22-22, but the Wildcats countered with a kill from Kingdon and then a service ace from Taylor Arizobal to take the set.
Arizona would take a late 20-14 lead in the third set before Utah came all the way back to take a 23-22 lead on another kill from Dalton, but the Wildcats closed with a 3-0 run to take the set and the match.
"It was a match of adjustments," said Launiere. "It was a fun match to coach because they did a lot of match-up blocking and had to counter with moving our hitters around. It was kind of a chess game out there."
Dalton finished the match with a team-high nine kills for the Utes and Chelsey Schofield-Olsen registered eight kills as well, while Utah managed to out-hit the Wildcats, .183 to .181.
Kingdon led the Wildcats with 18 kills and 12 digs to record her fifth double-double of the season and Penina Snuka tallied a match-high 38 kills and 16 digs for league-leading 11th double-double as well.
Lea Adolph led the Utes with 10 digs and Kalee Kirby tallied a team-high 19 assists. Utah out-blocked the Wildcats 11.5 to 3.0 in team blocks and was led by Carly Trueman's six total blocks.
The Utes will be back in action again this Sunday, Oct. 5, when they take on No. 17 Arizona State. First serve is set for 12 p.m. (MT) inside Crimson Court. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
