PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 23-ranked Utah volleyball team (16-12, 6-11 Pac-12) fell to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal (27-0, 17-0 Pac-12) in straight sets (23-25, 15-25, 18-25) Friday evening at Maples Center in Palo Alto, Calif.
Utah snapped a four-match winning streak with the loss and it also marked the Utes' ninth consecutive loss on the road this season. Meanwhile, Stanford, who tied a school record with its 27-0 start, remained the only undefeated team in the nation and the Cardinal pushed its regular-winning streak to 36-straight matches dating back to last season.
The Utes would come out and go toe-to-toe with the top-ranked team in the nation, but Stanford managed to record a .327 hitting percentage in the match and limited Utah to 35 kills with 22 attack errors for a hitting percentage of just .117 on the evening.
Both teams would trade points throughout the majority of the first set, which saw Utah and Stanford tally 15 ties, but the Cardinal managed to go on a late 4-0 run, which put Stanford up 22-18. The Utes called its final timeout of the set, and despite scoring five of the next seven points, Stanford countered with a timeout and came up with the final point to down Utah 25-23. The Cardinal collected 18 kills on .359 in the set, while limiting the Utes to 15 kills and just a .209 hitting percentage.
The Cardinal would go on an 8-3 run midway through the second set to go up 11-7 and that would force Utah to call a timeout. The Utes took the next point out of the break on redshirt freshman Carly Trueman's kill, but the home team countered with 9-4 run to go up 20-12 and the Cardinal never looked back en route to a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission break.
Senior Shelby Dalton opened the third set with a kill for the Utes, but Stanford would go on to hit .314 and take the set 25-18. Up by just two points (7-5) midway through the third set, the Cardinal would score eight of the next nine points, and despite making a late charge with a 4-0 run, the deficit was just too much for the Utes.
Senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen led the Utes with team-highs in both kills (eight) and digs (15), while Dalton followed offensively with seven kills and senior Lea Adolph tallied 13 kills for Utah on the defensive side of the net. Dalton and Trueman led the team with three total blocks each and senior Kalee Kirby collected a team-high 18 assists in the match.
The Utes will return to action this Sunday, Nov. 23, closing out its road trip to the Bay Area with an afternoon match-up at Cal. First serve between the Utes and the Bears is set for noon (MST).
