LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Utah Utes capped off its best volleyball season in the Pac-12 era by finishing the 2014 campaign ranked No. 18 in the nation overall, as the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll was released late Monday afternoon.
"It was an amazing year [for us] and that is reflected in our No. 18 final ranking," said Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "Winning seven out of eight matches and six of those wins coming against ranked opponents to end the season in the Pac-12 was a lot of fun"
The Utes, who finished the season with a record of 20-13, earned 443 total points in the final poll to move up two spots from its No. 20 ranking in the final regular-season poll that came out back on Dec. 1.
Utah closes out a campaign ranked inside the AVCA Top-25 poll for the seventh time in school history and the first time since 2008 when the Utes finished the season ranked No. 16 overall.
National Champions, Penn State (36-3), came in at No. 1 overall, while Utah's fellow Pac-12 member Stanford (33-2) finished the season at No. 2. Rival BYU (30-5), who fell to PSU in the championship match, finish the season ranked No. 3 overall, while Wisconsin (31-3) and Texas (27-3) close out the top five, respectively.
Along with Stanford and Utah, Nine of the 10 Pac-12 teams that earned berths into the NCAA Championship Tournament, finished the season with a top-25 ranking as well. Washington (31-3) finish the season ranked No. 9, while Oregon (23-10), UCLA (22-12) and Arizona (24-10) finished No. 14-16, respectively. Oregon State (20-13) followed the Utes at No. 20 and Colorado (20-14) came in at No. 21, while Arizona State (20-14) finalized the Pac-12 teams in the poll coming in at No. 22. USC (15-16) received votes in final poll.
Utah faced 10 teams this past season that finished ranked inside the top-25 poll and collected wins against five of those teams. Overall, Utah faced 12 opponents that were ranked inside the AVCA poll for at least one week this season.
"The Pac-12 Conference gives our student-athletes opportunities for big wins every night," said Launiere. "It challenges them to be the best they can be, weekend after weekend. These players that we have kept battling all season long."
