SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer opened its spring season with a home split this past weekend against Utah State and Utah Valley.
On Friday, the Utes topped Utah State, 2-1. Taylor Slattery put the home side in front when she collected a rebound off a corner kick in the 20th minute.
Utah doubled its lead in the 55th minute on a direct free kick by Avery Jenkins. The junior was able to find an opening around the wall inside the near post. USU scored with about eight minutes remaining to make the final moments interesting.
"The focus is on what we work on during training sessions," head coach Rich Manning said. "We want to continue to build our offense out of the back so we have to move the ball with confidence. We had some good attacking moments as our outside backs, Jill Robison and Sarah Duncan, were able to get forward."
On Saturday, Utah Valley scored at around the 15-miunte mark and held on to a 1-0 victory over Utah.
"We need to work on creating scoring chances," Manning stated. "Both of our goals on Friday came off set pieces so we must improve on our decision making in front of goal. In both games, we had a clear edge in possession, so that was positive."
Obviously, the spring is a time for growth, and Coach Manning realizes that the building of a team is a process. Health and chemistry are two invaluable attributes for any unit.
"Everyone who was available played this weekend," Manning added. "We have some new players like Mikayla Elmer and Audrey Gibb, and then we have some kids that didn't get game experience in the fall like Cabria Turang, Hannah Hyde and Nykell Seymour. This is the time you want to have players evolve so your team is set in the fall."
This Saturday, April 5, the Utes host the Utah Spring Classic. All the games will be played at Ute Field and are free to the public.
