SALT LAKE CITY - According to head volleyball coach Beth Launiere, the Utah volleyball team is coming together nicely and right where they need to be following Wednesday's second and final intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp.
"I thought what we saw today was good," said Launiere. "The team played at a higher level than the last scrimmage and there was a lot of good individual play as well. We are getting to the point where we can see the little things that we need to get better at and that is always good. With just a week to go, that is very beneficial."
Overall, the team combined to collect more than 85 total kills in the scrimmage that saw players swapping in-and-out over four sets. Senior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield-Olsen led the way with 16 kills in the scrimmage, while senior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton followed with 15 kills on the afternoon. Dalton led the squad with a 43 kill percentage and Schofield-Olsen followed with a kill ratio of 42 percent.
Freshman outside hitter Eliza Katoa tallied 12 kills on the day, while both Makenzie Moea'i and Adora Anae recorded 11 kills each.
The two primary setters, junior Kendall Cygan and freshman Jessie Jorgensen, combined to tally more than 60 assists over the four sets. Cygan led the way with 35 assists, while Jorgensen tallied a double-double netting more than 20 assists and 13 total digs.
Defensively, the Utes were led by sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Koenig, who recorded five block assists. Redshirt freshman Carly Trueman had four block assists as well, while Bailey Bateman, Dalton and Anae each had a solo block each.
At the libero position, senior Lea Adolph and sophomore Tess Sutton combined to record more than 40 digs between them.
The Utes will have just one more day of two-a-day practices as the team will close-out fall camp on Friday. The squad will then prepare to face some notable alumni players on Saturday, Aug. 23, in the Alumni Match that is set to begin at 3 p.m. inside Crimson Court.
Former alumni scheduled to appear include All-American Lori Baird, Adrianne Bradley-Drake, Linda Byington, Taryn Horner, Mikki Kane-Barton, Danielle Killpack, Morgan Odale, Karlie Porter and Cinthia Silva.
"It is fun for the alumni to return here and play in this match," said Launiere. "It is an honor to be able to come back and play here inside Crimson Court. It is important for the team as well, because we do our full match-day preparation. But, it will be fun to celebrate the tradition of the program and the people in it."
