News and Notes
This Weekend's Action
The University of Utah hosts Brigham Young University in the annual Deseret First Duel this Friday at 5 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
Utes Pick up Two Wins Over Weekend
Utah notched a pair of wins to open their home portion of the schedule this past weekend. The Utes got goals from Kaycee Buckley and Avery Jenkins before holding off Boise State on Friday, 2-1. Then, Baylee Nielsen and Megan Trabert notched their first goals of the season in a 2-0 blanking of CSUN on Sunday. Lindsey Luke registered her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career.
Utah Unbeaten Mark at Home
Utah currently owns a 14-match unbeaten streak at Ute Field which started in 2012 with a 3-1 victory over Oregon. Since then, Utah is 10-0-4 while out-scoring its opponents 29-9 and posting seven shutouts. Since joining the Pac-12, Utah is 23-4-4 at home.
NSCAA Notices Two Utes
Lindsey Luke and Katie Taylor were selected as all-Pacific Region choices by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America last season
Luke was chosen after being named second team all-Pac-12 and earning two conference Defensive Player of the Week awards. After being on the league's all-freshman team last year, Luke set the Utah single-season shutout mark this year with nine blankings. She finished with a goals-against average of 0.57, 19th in the nation and her save percentage (.894) ranked fifth nationally.
Taylor started every game for the Utes and led the team in goals and points, helping them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and sixth time overall. She also led the Utes in scoring during the 2012 campaign (4 G, 4 A).
Utah's Preseason Pac-12 Picks
Along with the returning Luke, three other Utes received preseason honors; Megan Trabert, Ashton Hall and Katie Rigby.
Trabert started every game at center back for Utah last season and had a knack for scoring in big games. She notched a pair in a win at Washington State and then again in the regular-season finale, a triumph over Colorado. This past weekend, she scored against CSUN.
Hall started 16 games for Utah and finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points. That total was buoyed by her team-high five assists. The junior also scored three goals, none bigger than the tally against No. 2 UCLA that earned the Utes a draw.
Rigby missed almost all of 2012 due to injury but battled back and played in every contest for the Utes in 2013. The defensive-minded Rigby notched her first collegiate goal in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winner against Oregon. She got her first goal of this season in the opener against Oral Roberts.
Utah Individual Rankings
Katie Taylor is currently tied for the team lead with five points. She ranks fifth in the Pac-12 in points along with her teammate Kaycee Buckley and leads the league with three helpers.
After scoring eight points in her first two seasons, Buckley has already tallied five points in 2014 with two goals and one assist. Her pair of scores ranks third in the Pac-12.
Six other Utes have also registered points this season with junior defender Nykell Seymour and sophomore midfielder Mikayla Elmer earning their first as Utes.
Utah's New Class
The Utes added nine newcomers to the team for the 2014 season including six true freshmen; Tamaryn Braun, Madi Clarkson, Mariah Elmer, July Gentry, Janie Kearl and Natalie Vukic.
Utah also brought in three transfers; Mikayla Elmer, Mariah's sister, from Portland, Audrey Gibb from Oregon State and Addie Jensen from Columbia University.
The Elmer sisters, Kearl, Vukic and Gibb have played in every game so far this season while Jensen has appeared twice off the bench.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
Over the weekend, BYU won 1-0 at Tennessee on an Elena Medeiros goal in the 17th minute. The Cougars lost 2-1 to Baylor in Provo on Monday after conceding goals in the final minute of the first half and the second minute of the second half. Sophomores Ashley Hatch and Elena Medeiros along with freshman Elisabeth Phillips have scored for BYU this season. Senior Niki Fernandes and freshman Nadia Gomes have assisted on goals for the Cougars. Goalkeepers Katherine Snyder and Hannah Clark have rotated halves this season and the pair has combined on two shutouts.
The Deseret Duel Rivalry Series
Friday night's matchup between Utah and BYU will mark the first contest of the 2014-15 Deseret First Duel rivalry series. The rivalry series includes each sport where Utah and BYU compete head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel uses a system that awards points to the winner of each competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner in each sport. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. A granite traveling trophy is awarded to the overall series champion each year.
Series History
Utah is 6-19-1 all-time against the Cougars and 3-8-0 against them in SLC. BYU has won five of six in this series but Utah won the last meeting here at Ute Field in 2012.
Jill Robison's early goal was the difference as Utah came out on top, 1-0. Lindsey Luke relieved an injured Cheyanne Mulcock and made six saves to preserve the shutout. It was the only loss of that season for the Cougars.
Last season, BYU converted a controversial penalty kick in the 87th minute to defeat the Utes, 1-0
Nine Utah Games to be Televised Live on Pac-12 Networks
Nine of the University of Utah soccer team's 2014 matches will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
Four of those matches will be home contests at Ute Field, including the Pac-12 opener against perennial power Stanford on Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. MT. Additional Utah matches to be carried on Pac-12 Networks are home contests against BYU (Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. MT), Arizona (Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. MT) and Arizona State (Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. MT).
Five Utah road matches will be televised as well, including contests at defending national champion UCLA (Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. PT), USC (Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. PT), Oregon (Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. PT), California (Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. PT) and Colorado in the regular-season finale (Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. MT).
The nine televised contests are the most for the Utes since joining the Pac-12 Conference. Utah was on television seven times during its inaugural campaign in 2012 and six times during its NCAA Tournament run last season.
Preseason Prognostication

Behind them were California (91), USC (83), Colorado (78), Washington State (69), Utah (67), Arizona State and Washington, (51), Arizona (33), Oregon (22) and Oregon State (16).
