News and Notes
This Weekend's Action
The University of Utah will host UNLV on Friday evening as part of a Blackout at 7:30 p.m. The Utes then travel to UC Davis for a Sunday contest at 1 p.m. PT
Deseret First Duel Decided by Taylor
Utah's Katie Taylor converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute the Utes topped BYU in the annual Deseret First Duel, 1-0. A rampaging run by Ali Allen set up the decisive spot try.
On a night that it also honored 20 years of women's soccer history at the university, Utah fought valiantly and earned an exciting win over its arch-rival in front of a record crowd.
Lindsey Luke would finish with five saves, giving her a third shutout this season and 16 for her career.
Utah Unbeaten Mark at Home
Utah currently owns a 15-match unbeaten streak at Ute Field which started in 2012 with a 3-1 victory over Oregon. Since then, Utah is 11-0-4 while out-scoring its opponents 30-9 and posting eight shutouts. Since joining the Pac-12, Utah is 24-4-4 at home.
Ute Fans Showing Up in Record Numbers
Utah currently leads the Pac-12 in home attendance with an average of 1,604 fans per contest. The Utes recently set the school record with over 2,500 fans in attendance for the annual rivalry contest with BYU.
NSCAA Notices Two Utes
Lindsey Luke and Katie Taylor were selected as all-Pacific Region choices by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America last season
Luke was chosen after being named second team all-Pac-12 and earning two conference Defensive Player of the Week awards. After being on the league's all-freshman team last year, Luke set the Utah single-season shutout mark this year with nine blankings. She finished with a goals-against average of 0.57, 19th in the nation and her save percentage (.894) ranked fifth nationally.
Taylor started every game for the Utes and led the team in goals and points, helping them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and sixth time overall. She also led the Utes in scoring during the 2012 campaign (4 G, 4 A).
Utah's Preseason Pac-12 Picks
Along with the returning Luke, three other Utes received preseason honors; Megan Trabert, Ashton Hall and Katie Rigby.
Trabert started every game at center back for Utah last season and had a knack for scoring in big games. She notched a pair in a win at Washington State and then again in the regular-season finale, a triumph over Colorado. This past weekend, she scored against CSUN.
Hall started 16 games for Utah and finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points. That total was buoyed by her team-high five assists. The junior also scored three goals, none bigger than the tally against No. 2 UCLA that earned the Utes a draw.
Rigby missed almost all of 2012 due to injury but battled back and played in every contest for the Utes in 2013. The defensive-minded Rigby notched her first collegiate goal in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winner against Oregon. She got her first goal of this season in the opener against Oral Roberts.
Utah Individual Rankings
Katie Taylor currently leads the way with seven points. She ranks 10th in the Pac-12 in points and ranks third in assists.
After scoring eight points in her first two seasons, Kaycee Buckley has already tallied five points in 2014 with two goals and one assist.
Six other Utes have also registered points this season with junior defender Nykell Seymour and sophomore midfielder Mikayla Elmer earning their first as Utes.
Utah's New Class
The Utes added nine newcomers to the team for the 2014 season including six true freshmen; Tamaryn Braun, Madi Clarkson, Mariah Elmer, July Gentry, Janie Kearl and Natalie Vukic.
Utah also brought in three transfers; Mikayla Elmer, Mariah's sister, from Portland, Audrey Gibb from Oregon State and Addie Jensen from Columbia University.
The Elmer sisters, Vukic and Gibb have played in every game so far this season while Kearl has appeared in four contests and Jensen has seen action twice.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
UNLV has gotten off to a 3-1-0 start after having this weekend off. The Rebels split a pair of contests two weekends ago as they followed up a 3-0 loss to Colorado with a 3-0 win over St. Francis. Junior Jodi Barber has a pair of goals this season to lead UNLV while junior Denali Murnan leads the squad with three assists.
UC Davis is 3-3-0 after being blanked in a pair of losses this weekend to SEMO and Air Force. Through six contests, the Aggies have scored three goals, all by different players. Goalkeeper Taylor Jern has notched shutouts in all three wins for UCD against Quinnipiac, San Jose State and Sacramento State.
Series History
Utah is 11-4-3 all-time against UNLV as the two teams both used to play against one another in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes have only lost once in 10 matches in Salt Lake to the Rebels.
However, UNLV was the final MWC opponent faced by the Utes after losing 4-1 in the 2010 conference tournament. Utah joined the Pac-12 Conference the next season.
Against current members of the MWC, Utah owns an overall mark of 82-26-11 after beating Boise State earlier this season.
Utah and UC Davis have played once before, drawing last season at Ute Field, 2-2. Ali Allen provided the equalizer in the contest for the home team.
Utah is 13-4-5 all-time against teams from the Big West after topping CSUN two weeks ago.
Utah Games to be Televised Live on Pac-12 Networks
You can catch the University of Utah soccer team eight more times on the Pac-12 Networks this fall.
Three of those matches will be home contests at Ute Field, including the Pac-12 opener against perennial power Stanford on Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. MT. Additional Utah matches to be carried on Pac-12 Networks are home contests against Arizona (Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. MT) and Arizona State (Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. MT).
Five Utah road matches will be televised as well, including contests at defending national champion UCLA (Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. PT), USC (Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. PT), Oregon (Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. PT), California (Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. PT) and Colorado in the regular-season finale (Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. MT).

Behind them were California (91), USC (83), Colorado (78), Washington State (69), Utah (67), Arizona State and Washington, (51), Arizona (33), Oregon (22) and Oregon State (16).
