SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team prepares to head to two different meets this weekend. The women's distance runners gear up to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash. The meet is slated to begin this Friday at 5:40 p.m. PT at the Dempsey Indoor Track. Meanwhile, the throwers will stay a little bit closer to home as they travel to Pocatello, Idaho for the Mountain State Games.
"We will be splitting up this weekend," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We will take the distance runners up to Seattle and the throwers will go to Pocatello for the Mountain State Games. We are splitting up so that our runners and throwers we can take advantage of the facilities and the types of meets that are going on. Our sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers will have the weekend to rest and gear up for the New Mexico Classic next week."
Redshirt senior Rebekah Winterton and freshman Sarah Feeny will lead the distance group in Seattle. Both runners are coming off of first-place performances last weekend at the Snake River Open. Winterton captured the event title in the 3,000 with a time of 9:52.33 and Feeny won the 1,000-meter in her first collegiate meet. Veterans Nikki Rietz and Andrea Chavez are also slated to compete for the Utes. Rietz finished sixth in the open mile last year at the Washington Invitational with a lifetime best time of 4:59.39. Chavez looks to improve upon the 26th-place finish in the invitational mile last year in this meet.
The throwing group competed well last season at the Mountain State Games, with five top-ten performances and two event titles. Senior Aoife Hickey will lead the way for the Utes as she hopes to have a similar performance this weekend. Hickey finished third overall last season in the weight throw with a throw measuring 56-05.5 feet. Other throwers to keep an eye on this weekend include redshirt senior Destanae Howerton-Davis and sophomores Kassie Nagel and Ilse Kaaja. Earlier this season at the BYU Invitational, Howerton-Davis and Nagel captured two of the top three spots in the shot put and Kaaja secured third in the weight throw.
