SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team fell in its home finale, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) to No. 2-ranked Washington Wednesday evening at the Huntsman Center.
The loss drops Utah to 10-20 overall on the season and 4-15 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies improved to 27-2 and 17-2 in conference play.
The Huskies took the first set, 25-17, after out-hitting the Utes .242 to -.034 and recording 12 kills to Utah's eight in the frame. Utah opened the frame matching the visiting squad point-for-point, but a 5-1 run pushed UW's lead to 8-5 and the Huskies never trailed again. Utah got the set back to within four points, down 17-13, following a service ace from freshman Berkeley Oblad, but UW closed out the set with an 8-4 run that included winning the final two points.
After Washington jumped out to a 12-7 lead and later extended the point advantage to 19-13, Utah countered with a 4-1 run that included a service ace from freshman Megan Shughrou to pull back within three points, but the Huskies still managed to take the frame 25-18 after winning five of the final six points. UW recorded five service aces and six total blocks in the set.
Utah would lead by as many as four points early in the third set, but Washington later countered with an 8-1 lead to take an 18-14 lead. The Utes called a timeout and won the next two points on a kill from sophomore Adora Anae and a UW attack error, but the Huskies closed out the set with a 7-3 run take the frame 25-19.
UW won for the 10th straight time and moved to 21-0 in three-set matches on the season. The Huskies also moved to 13-6 all-time against the Utes following the victory.
Anae led all players with 11 kills, while both her and Shughrou tied for the team lead with nine digs each. Anae wrapped up the home schedule recording double-digit kill efforts in all but one home match, collecting at least 11 kills in 13 of Utah's 14 home contests this season.
Senior Kendall Cygan played her final home match of her career and finished tonight's contest leading the Utes with 13 assists. Meanwhile, fellow senior Brenna DeYoung recored three kills and a pair of blocks in her final home match, as well.
Sophomore Emma Kirst led the Utes at the net on Wednesday, posting a team-high four total blocks.
The Utes will close out the 2015 regular season on Friday, taking on Colorado in Boulder. First serve between the Utes and Buffs is set for 12 p.m. at Coors Events Center.
