SALT LAKE CITY - Brandon Taylor was one of six Utah players scoring in double figures with a game-high 20 points and Kyle Kuzma recorded a double-double to help guide the Runnin' Utes to a 124-70 exhibition victory over the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters Thursday evening at the Huntsman Center.
"It was good for our guys to get out and play together," Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "We had seven guys nearly score in double figures when offense was not the focal point coming in. We kept it vanilla with what we were doing, but some of the new guys got to score and it was good for us to get into an environment where our guys were not beating up on each other."
Along with Taylor's 20-point effort and Kuzma scoring 14 points on the night, Jordan Loveridge added 17 points, Lorenzo Bonam and Gabe Bealer had 14 points each, and Isaiah Wright scored 10 points in the 54-point exhibition victory.
All 14 players that entered the game scored at least one point on the night.
Utah took a 63-39 lead into the locker room at halftime behind Taylor's 15 points and Loveridge's 12 points in the first half. Taylor was 4-for-7 from the field, which included a pair of three-pointers and a 5-for-5 effort from the charity stripe, while Loveridge went 5-for-8 from the field and 1-for-3 from the arc.
Kuzma tallied 11 points in the first half, going 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and Jakob Poeltl scored all nine of his points in the first half on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor.
The Utes shot 55.6 percent (20-for-36) from the floor, 40.0 percent (6-for-15) from the arc and 73.9 percent (17-for-23) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes of play.
Utah pulled down 30 rebounds in the first half, as Kuzma led all players at the rim with seven boards. Poeltl added six rebounds and Loveridge managed to grab four in the first period of play.
The Otters shot just 35.9 percent (14-for-39) from the field in the first half, but did manage to knock down 41.7 percent (5-for-12) of its shots from downtown. Ryan Nitz led the Otters with 11 points at the break.
Utah opened the second half with a 17-0 run and never looked back, outscoring the Otters 61-31 in the final frame. CSUMB did not score its first point of the second period until the 15:27 mark.
The Utes shot 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the field in the second half and finished the game with a 58.2 percent (39-for-67) effort.
"It is more than just being an offensively minded team," Taylor said. "If anything, we want to be more ahead on the defensive side of the ball. I think we have a great group of guys and we are so deep in our depth chart, that we have players that can come in and score the ball. We need to also have guys that can come in and be defensive stoppers."
CSUMB managed to shoot just 28.2 percent (11-for-39) from the field over the final 20 minutes of play, which included going just 1-for-11 (9.1 percent) from beyond the three-point line.
Nitz finished the game leading the Otters in scoring, pouring in a team-high 15 points with a 7-for-17 shooting effort.
Kuzma and Poeltl led the Utes on the boards with 10 rebounds each, as Utah finished the game outrebounding the Otters 61 to 31. Utah also tallied eight steals and forced 10 total turnovers.
"Coach [Krystkowiak] has been stressing to us as a team about rebounding and I just take that to heart," Kuzma said. "I really try and get to to the boards every time. I just need to play hard and that's what I'll continue to do."
