SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah women’s throwing core will stay close to home this week as they gets set to compete at the Wildcat Indoor Open in Ogden, Utah. The event will take place Thursday at the Golden Spike Arena beginning at 2 p.m. MT with the weight throw.
“We have a few throwers going up to Weber State this week,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Everyone else will rest, or prepare for the MPSF Championships next week. Those who are not going to that will start to focus on the outdoor season.”
Starting the meet off, the Utah throws group will compete in the weight throw. Look for senior Aoife Hickey to continue to lead the way in this event after a eighth-place performance last week at the Husky Invitational. Hickey has posted a number of solid performances so far this indoor season and looks to continue that momentum as she uses this meet to help prepare for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 27. Sophomore Ilse Kaaja will also be competing for the Utes after capturing ninth at the Husky Invitational.
Following the weight throw, the Utah throwers will compete in the shot put at 3:15 p.m. MT. Last week, senior Destanae Howerton-Davis had her work cut out for her as she competed against some of the top throwers in the nation at the Husky Invitational. Howerton-Davis rose to the challenge and was able to qualify for the final round, where she threw a distance of 14.69 meters to capture sixth. Sophomore Kassie Nagel will accompany Howerton-Davis in their last chance to make the small changes needed to have the success they hope for at the MPSF Championships.
