SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team will keep the 2015 outdoor season rolling as javelin thrower Megan Glasmann heads to the Texas Relays and a select few student-athletes also travel to Orem, Utah this Saturday to compete at the UVU Collegiate Invitational.
Glasmann competes at the Texas Relays on Friday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. CT. The meet features some of the top collegiate track athletes from around the country. The UVU Invitational will take place at the Hal Wing Track and Field facility and will include a majority of teams from Utah, including Utah State, Weber State, BYU, Southern Utah and Westminster.
"We are only sending a small group of kids to Utah Valley this weekend," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Most of our kids are going to stay here and train this weekend. Unfortunately, we have really struggled with some injuries over the last few weeks. We are a little more thin in some areas than we expected to be. The good news is that everyone who is healthy is training well and we certainly had some great performances last week."
The majority of the Utah athletes will stay in Salt Lake this weekend to rest and prepare for the Stanford Invitational next weekend. Although falling short against the Oregon State Beavers last week in Utah's dual meet, the Utes recorded several impressive performances including 13 new personal records and a new school record in the javelin.
Glasmann's performance in the javelin highlighted Utah's first weekend of competition when she broke former Ute standout Kaitlin Urmston's previous record by 18 feet in her first competition as a Ute. Freshman Sarah Feeny recorded the fourth-fastest 1,500 time in school history. Feeny's time of 4:22.83 was also a new personal best for her and was fast enough to capture first in the event. Both Glasmann and Feeny's performances should qualify them for the NCAA Regional meet later this year.
"We will really focus on a great training week this week and early next week," Kepler said. "We will head out to Stanford next weekend and that will be a national level meet where we will have to find out where we are at. We will have to get some injuries and illnesses cleaned up and then we will go from there."
