SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team prepares for the first big test of the 2015 outdoors season as they head to California this weekend. The Utes are schedule to compete at the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco Distance Carnival on Friday and Saturday. The Stanford Invitational will take place at the Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif. beginning Friday at 10:22 a.m. PT with the women's 5,000 race. Athletes competing in San Francisco will begin action at the Cox Stadium with the women's 10,000 race.
"This week we will go to Stanford and San Francisco State," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The Stanford Invitational is a very large, invitational meet that will involve teams from all over the country. It is particularly tough in the distance events. We will send those who don't meet the entry standards for the Stanford Invitational up to San Francisco State on Friday morning and get them some quality competition. We have had some outstanding performances at that meet. They just do a terrific job of hosting that meet and the weather, track and the surroundings are all outstanding."
Coming off great performances at the dual meet against Oregon State, true freshman Sarah Feeny and redshirt senior Rebekah Winterton will lead the way for the Utes. Feeny is currently ranks seventh in the NCAA and second among freshmen in the 1,500 after posting a time of 4:22.83 at the OSU Dual Meet. Winterton captured first in the 3,000 at the OSU Dual Meet with a time of 9:45.21. With nationally ranked athletes scheduled to compete, Feeny and Winterton have a chance to prove they are some of the premiere distance runners in the nation.
The Utah throwing group will also have a lot to prove after starting the 2015 season with a bang. Sophomore Megan Glasmann currently ranks second in the Pac-12 and tenth in the NCAA in the javelin, after recording a new Utah school record and season-best throw of 168 feet, 4 inches at the OSU Dual Meet. Senior Destanae Howerton-Davis currently ranks in the top ten in the Pac-12 in two events. Howerton-Davis ranks seventh in the league in the discus with a season-best throw measuring 155 feet, 1 inch and tenth in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 5.75 inches. Ilse Kaaja will lead the Utes in the hammer throw, currently ranked 11th in the nation (third in Pac-12) after posting a throw of 197 feet, 11 inches at the OSU Dual Meet.
The hurdle events will feature Christine Van Brocklin. Van Brocklin is fresh off a second-place performance in the 100 hurdles at the OSU Dual Meet and hopes to continue to keep the ball rolling as she distinguishes herself as Utah's top athlete in the event.
