SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer completed its first weekend of spring action with a pair of results. The Utes topped RSL Women SC 1-0 and then earned a 1-1 draw at Weber State.
Utah started their slate with a victory over RSL Women SC thanks to a late goal from Taylor Slattery.
In the 72nd minute, Cabria Turang stole the ball in the midfield and found Mikayla Elmer. The rising junior found Slattery behind the defense for the eventual game-winner.
"I was pleased with the defense because we almost had a entirely new back four from what he had during the season," head coach Rich Manning said. "The majority of the minutes went to Ali Allen, Baylee Nielsen, Megan Trabert and Hannah Hyde. I thought they were really good, and Audrey Gibb and Katie Rogers gave us valuable minutes. They all helped control play by keeping the ball and snuffing out RSL's attacks."
In their second match, the Utes drew at Weber State, 1-1. Rogers headed in a free-kick from Trabert around the 20-minute mark before the home side equalized in the final 10 minutes.
"Offensively, Janie Kearl and Mikayla took control in both games and showed marked improvement from the fall," Manning added. "They provided lots of energy, kept the ball, and made the right passes. I was pleased that we created chances and forced the opposing goalkeepers into saves."
Utah continues its spring slate this weekend with a match against Pac-12 rival USC. The Utes and Trojans play at Heritage Park in Henderson, Nev., at noon this Saturday.
