SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer traveled down the road to Provo for Match Day 4 of its spring training. The Utes split a pair of 60-minute matches, defeating Southern Utah, 5-0 in the opener and falling to host BYU, 2-0.
In the opener, five different players notched goals in an explosive offensive display. Mariah Elmer (10'), Baylee Nielsen (13'), Taylor Slattery (28'), Natalie Vukic (40') and Katie Rogers (56') all cracked the score sheet. Freshmen goalkeepers July Gentry and Tamaryn Braun split time in the nets to earn the shutout.
"The attacking players have been working hard on being more aggressive and creative in making chances and the SUU match was a fantastic display," head coach Rich Manning said. "Our skill, awareness and movement were excellent and we were clinical in finishing. It was great to see the training pay off."
In the second match, the Utes fell to BYU, 2-0, giving up goals late in the first period and midway through the second. Lindsey Luke made some outstanding saves in goal as the Utes created some good chances but were unable to get one in the net.
"I was disappointed in our performance," Manning said. "We did not work hard enough to control play and our defensive pressure was not good enough. We did create a handful of good chances, but other than that we did not do enough to earn a result. I think it's safe to say this match will serve as a good reminder of the importance of the mental and physical components of soccer. We hope to bounce back this upcoming weekend."
