SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team travels to Des Moines, Iowa on Friday to compete at the 106th annual Drake Relays. The runners will begin on Friday at 8:00 a.m. CT at Drake Stadium. Athletes not competing at the Drake Relays will be at the BYU Robison Invitational at the Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex in Provo, Utah on Friday.
"This coming weekend we will head to Iowa to compete at the Drake Relays," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We will run primarily in four different relays there: the 4xmile, the distance medley, sprint medley and the 4x400 prelims. The rest of our group will be down at BYU at the BYU Robison Invitational."
The Drake Relays have always been a meet that the Utes have experienced great success. In 2013, the Utes recorded two third-place performances in the open 800-meter run and the 4x800 relay. Last year, the Utes recorded four top-ten performances, including a new school record in the 800 by former Ute standout Rosalie Waller.
The Utes look to continue that success as they gear up to compete and qualify individuals for the NCAA Regional Championships next month. The Drake Relays historically attracts the top programs in the country.
Look for a combination of veteran leadership and underclassman talent to play a major role in the Utes success this weekend. With nine seniors on the roster, experience and leadership have already played a key role so far in the 2015 season. The Utes also have ten talented freshmen eager to establish themselves as great competitors.
The remaining runners and all the throwers will stay close to home and compete at the Robison Invitational.
In 2014, the Utah throwers dominated the field at the Robison Invitational. Senior Aoife Hickey captured the hammer throw event title last season after throwing a distance of 199 feet, 8.75 inches. Ilse Kaaja also made a splash in her freshman season, finishing third with a throw of 193 feet, 6.75 inches. Look for several of the Utah throwers to step up and punch their tickets to the NCAA Regional Championships with impressive performances.
