SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer continued its spring season with a 1-0 loss to USC this past weekend at Heritage Park in Henderson, Nev.
Utah controlled much of the first half against the Trojans and created good chances with Taylor Slattery getting a shot on goal during a counter attack and Natalie Vukic volleying a cross that was saved by the USC goalkeeper. Madi Clarkson and Katie Rogers had headers from go wide off Utah free kicks.
In the second half, USC increased their pressure and the Utah defense responded with a handful of nice plays. The Trojans got their goal with 10 minutes left when a back pass slipped past the Utah goalkeeper. Utah picked up the offensive intensity after the goal and earned a couple of corner kicks, but couldn't find the equalizer.
"The game with USC gave us a great picture of where we are in our spring training," head coach Rich Manning said. "Once again, we limited a team to very few chances. We showed we are very hard to break down on defense. Our back line; Ali Allen, Baylee Nielsen, Hannah Hyde and Megan Trabert, has been excellent all spring."
"Our attacking group pressured very well and created several opportunities on the break after dispossessing the Trojans. I also loved the way we responded after the goal. We fought hard for the tying goal when it could have demoralized us to concede the way we did."
Utah is back in action this Saturday with two contests at BYU. The Utes play Southern Utah at 2 p.m. and the Cougars at 5 p.m.
