Utah Spring Classic Heat Sheet ![]()
SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team will host its fourth annual Utah Spring Classic on Friday April 10. Events begin at 2:30 p.m. with the hammer throw on Guardsman Way Field and the men's pole vault at the McCarthey Track. The track events begin at 4:45 p.m. with the women's 3,000 meters.
Admission is free to all fans. Fans in attendance will receive a free water bottle (while supplies last). Kids 12 and under will be able to compete in 'Fastest Kids Race' 100-meter dash, scheduled for 8:05 p.m. In addition, Seniors Aoife Hickey, Destanae Howerton-Davis, Lauren Mills and Rebekah Winterton will be honored in a Senior Day presentation as they compete in their final home competition for Utah.
"We are excited to compete in front of a home crowd once again this season," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We appreciate all of the help we have received from our volunteers and administration and I hope that everyone will come out to McCarthey Track and support us."
The Utah Spring Classic has traditionally meet has attracted all of the universities and colleges in the area as well as top competition from the Western region and top individuals competing independently.
Getting the action underway on Friday will be the Utah throwing group, beginning with the hammer throw. Sophomore Ilse Kaaja has captured the event title in every meet she has competed in and has the 20th-best throw in the country this year (197'-11") which ranks fifth all-time at Utah. She is ranked second in the Mountain region in the event and 32nd nationally. Hickey is ranked third in the region in the hammer (188'-7"). Howerton-Davis will compete in the shot put, where she holds the school record is ranked second in the region.
The distance events will feature the Utah veteran-freshman tandem of senior Rebekah Winterton and true freshman Sarah Feeny. Winterton holds the school record in the 10,000 and ranks second all-time at Utah in the 5,000. Feeny has the 12th-fastest time in the 1,500 this year (4:20.65) and is ranked second in the region in the event while ranking 43rd nationally. She is also seventh in the region in the 800.
Sophomore Alissa Atisme, who holds the school record in both the 100 and 200, will represent Utah in the sprint races.
