SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer head coach Rich Manning has announced the addition of former Dutch Under-19 national team member Paola van der Veen for the 2015 season.
"As a player, Paola has played at the highest levels in Europe," Manning said. "She is very versatile, can play on any row, is confident on the ball, an excellent passer and has a rocket of a left foot. She has clearly demonstrated her leadership during her time as captain of ADO den Haag. We look forward to her arriving in Salt Lake City and bringing these qualities to our team."
"When I started this adventure, there were a lot of universities interested in me," van der Veen stated. "I chose Utah because it feels like home, with the coach, team and academic program. I¹m looking forward to playing for Utah!"
Van der Veen has been a member of the Dutch youth national teams since 2008 and was recently invited to train with the senior squad. She suited up for the Dutch U-17 team at the European Championships and the U-19 team during its Euro qualifying matches.
In 2012, van der Veen joined ADO den Haag in The Hague, Netherlands. Her first season saw the squad capture the KNVB Cup as well as second-place finish in the BeNe League Orange. This past season, she was named team captain and led ADO den Haag to the KNVB Cup semifinals as well as a fourth-place finish In the reconfigured BeNe League.
Van der Veen is the daughter of Fred and Maria, and has a twin sister, Yvette. Paola also spent two year at Inholland Hogeschool.
"Over the last several months, we have had the chance to get to know Paola as a person and a player," Manning added. "She checks all the boxes we look for on our team. She is a hard-worker, passionate about soccer and a great teammate. Her parents have raised her well and that is evident in her character. She has dreamed of coming to the United States to develop her soccer as well as pursue a degree in the television/film production area. We are thrilled she has chosen Utah as the place where she can realize this dream."
