PARK CITY, Utah - Utah volleyball fall camp is in full swing as the team heads into week two and with just a little less than two weeks away from the first match of the 2015 season, head coach Beth Launiere is happy with what she has seen so far from her squad.
"I am very pleased with everything so far in camp," said Launiere. "We have moved forward in our system with great presentation and pace. There has been a really nice effort, both mentally and physically from the players and we are continuing to get through everything in the system so far, which has been nice to see."
Senior setter Kendall Cygan has also been impressed with what she has seen from the team.
"We are looking very well, so far," said Kendall Cygan. "We are progressing a lot faster than we projected this early in camp. We are running a lot of sixes out on the floor right now and that is very good for our system.
"The team chemistry is coming a long great. We don't have as much experience as we had last season, but the communication is coming a long great and we are clicking on the court right now. We still need to dial in on the little things, but with our progression so far, I think that everything will continue to come in place as we head towards that first match."
The team took a break from normal practices in Salt Lake City this week, making the trip over to Park City to get away from the norm with a few days practicing at Park City High School.
"It is nice to get away and not have some of the distractions that we might have back home," said Launiere. "It has been really nice to all be together outside of practice, including the coaches. It is nice to do a few team activities as a whole, getting to know each other more and that is what this is all about."
The Utes will continue workouts in Park City through Tuesday evening and return home on Wednesday to close out the remainder of fall camp. Utah volleyball fans will then be able to get its first glimpse of the team this Saturday, Aug. 22, as the squad hosts the Red and White scrimmage, with is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
"We still have a lot of work to do," said Launiere. "The offense is ahead of our defense right now, but the defense is really starting to come a long. We are starting to establish some roles on the team and getting some of the lineups in place."
Following the Red and White scrimmage Saturday evening, the Utes will take Sunday off before resuming regular workouts when classes begin on Monday, Aug. 24.
