The Utah cross country team continues its preseason training this week as classes began on Monday, Aug. 24.
After reporting last Monday, the Utes spent most of their first week in preseason camp training in Heber City.
"We are probably about as healthy as we have ever been coming in for training and out of camp," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We certainly have some issues, but everyone was able to run. We definitely had some quality workouts and quality runs, which was exciting to see. We have the biggest group we have ever had and we put them through a little bit of a grinder, training up where we did. We knew by the end of the week they were tired, but we made sure that their long run on Saturday was not on difficult terrain and they were able to get their legs back. Like I said, I feel pretty good about where we are at and it is time to go to work. Like a lot of the other fall sports, camp seems fun and sounds fun and exciting, but that all wears off and the real work begins and school starts. That is where we are at right now. We just have to get ourselves emerged in the academic side of things and make sure that we get a good start there and get that under control."

The Utes kick off their season at the Utah State Open on Sept. 5.
"We are 12 days away from our first meet and we will figure out who we are going to race there, and our home meet is only six days after that," Kepler said. "We are not going to race everybody at the first two meets. We are going to take our time and try some different lineups and different things. You are not going to see Sarah Feeny, Shaylen Crook or the girls who had long summers of track in the first few meets. We are not going to race them until the end of September, so don't be surprised when you don't see our best lineup out there to start with. The good thing is that it gives some of our younger kids a chance to fill those spots, see where they are at and see if we can find some more depth, which we need."
Utah hosts the Utah Open on Sept. 11.
