Utah baseball has eight former Utes currently playing in professional baseball.
C.J. Cron is hitting .253 in 59 games with nine doubles and six home runs for the Los Angeles Angels. He was strong at the plate during the month of July, hitting .343 with five doubles, four homers and 12 RBI. Cron had five RBI against Texas on July 26 and drove in four runs during a 4-for-4 night against Minnesota on July 21. Cron has also played two stints with the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees this season.
Tyler Wagner made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on May 31 and has spent the remainder of the season with the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers. He has been solid in his last two outings, setting a new team record with 11 strikeouts in a win over Pensacola on July 24 and allowing just one hit over seven innings in a win over Jacksonville on July 31. Wagner is currently tied for second in the Southern League in ERA (2.38) and ranks in the top 10 with 91 strikeouts. He was named to the All-Star game earlier this year.
Tanner Banks leads the Pioneer League with a 1.14 ERA for the Rookie League Great Falls Voyagers. He is 3-1 with 16 strikeouts in eight games. Banks was named the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week on July 20 after holding Ogden to three hits and no runs over six innings, and he was selected to start the Pioneer League All-Star Game on August 4. He also played eight games with the Single-A Kannapolis Intimidators to start the season, picking up one save.
Trey Nielsen is 9-6 in 17 starts for the Single-A Palm Beach Cardinals with 66 strikeouts and ranks fourth in the Florida State League with a 2.60 ERA. His last outing on July 28 he allowed just four hits and no runs over seven innings against Brevard.
Parker Morin is hitting .362 over 34 games for the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals in the Texas League. He has six doubles, five triples and three home runs with 20 RBI. He hit a two-run, walk-off triple in a win over Springfield on August 1 and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Morin has had at least one hit in nine of his last 11 games with five multiple-hit games. He spent the first part of the season on rehab assignment and also played three games for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Carolina League.
Nick Green has played eight games with the Rookie League Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League. He is 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA and 12 strikeouts. He started the season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Carolina League, going 2-1 with two saves a 6.66 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 17 games.
After being chosen in the ninth round of the MLB Draft in June, Bret Helton joined the West Virginia Black Bears of the New-York Penn League. He is 2-4 with a 5.65 ERA over eight starts, and has 21 strikeouts. His best game came on July 10, allowing one run and no hits over five innings with five strikeouts against Lowell.
Mitch Watrous has not played this season after undergoing shoulder surgery at the beginning of the season, but is currently on the seven-day disabled list with the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League.
