A LOOK AT THE UTES
The Utes head into the midweek clash with the Aggies with a 2-1 overall record after picking up a pair of wins and one loss this past weekend at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City.
Utah downed Idaho State in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21) on Friday and swept CSUN (25-20, 25-18, 25-8) on Saturday morning before falling in four sets (19-25, 30-28, 23-25, 23-25) to Lipscomb later that evening.
Utah hit .300 as a team and went on to best the opposition in all statistical categories along the way in the team's season-opening match against the Bengals on Friday. The Utes outhit ISU 59-46 in kills and tallied nine more assists (53-44). Utah had 18 total blocks (9.0 team blocks), while ISU tallied 11 total blocks (6.0 team blocks) on the evening.
Utah took its hot hitting into the next day of the tournament, hitting at a clip of .349 against CSUN on Saturday morning and the defense did the rest, collecting 11 total blocks and limiting the Matadors to just .144 hitting over the three-set sweep.
The Utes outhit Lipscomb as a team, .270 to .268, while recording more assists (63-59) and blocks (15-10) than the Bisons did on the evening, but Utah's 13 service errors had a hand in lending the home team its first loss of the season.
Utah is currently hitting .302 as a team, while averaging 15.2 kills, 14.0 assists, 1.7 aces, 15.5 digs and 2.1 blocks per set.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
Utah State enters Tuesday's contest 1-2 on the season after going 1-2 at the Texas Tech Tournament in Lubbock, Texas, this past weekend. The Aggies opened with losses to Texas Tech (21-25, 20-25, 17-25) and Houston (21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 16-25) on Friday, but then put together a three-set sweep against Louisiana-Lafayette (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) to close out the tournament on Saturday.
Kaylie Kamalu led the Aggies with 32 kills (3.20/set) on the weekend, while Lauren O'Brien (19 kills) tallied a team-best .417 hitting percentage and 11 total blocks (1.10/set) in her 10 sets played. Erica Moscoso tallied a team-high 84 assists (8.40/set) and Hannah Gleason led the back row with 37 digs (3.40/set).
The Aggies are hitting .155 as a team, while averaging 10.7 kills, 10.2 assists, 1.4 aces, 14.8 digs and 1.8 blocks per set.
SERIES HISTORY
Utah leads the all-time series 46-25, has won three straight matches and has tallied a record of 8-2 against the Aggies over the previous 10 meetings. The Utes won last season's meeting in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-19), downing the Aggies at Wayne Estes Center in Logan.
Including last season's victory, Utah is 17-10 all-time when facing the Aggies on the road. Utah has won four of its last five road meetings against Utah State, with the last loss coming back on Oct. 30, 2007.
Head coach Beth Launiere is 27-6 all-time when facing the Aggies.
UTAH ON THE ROAD
The Utes have won five straight and seven of the previous eight road-opening matches dating back to 2007. Utah's last loss in a road-opening match came back on Sept. 4, 2009 at Utah Valley.
Utah is just 26-41 in road matches dating back to 2010, but are 12-3 overall against non-conference opponents - not including matches in the postseason.
UTAH STATE AT HOME
The Aggies, who went 7-6 inside the Wayne Estes Center last season, are 41-21 at home dating back to the 2010 season. Utah State dropped its last home match of 2014, but did win five of its last seven contests on its home court.
LAUNIERE CLOSES IN ON WIN NO. 500
Utah head coach Beth Launiere has tallied a career record of 493-304 (.619) after picking up a pair of wins at the Utah Classic this past weekend and is now just seven wins shy from recording career-win No. 500.
All 493 of her career wins have been recorded at Utah since she took over the program in 1990. During that stretch, Launiere has tallied 15, 20-win seasons, which included 21 victories in 2013 and 20 wins last season.
ANAE SETS NEW MARK FOR KILLS
Sophomore outside hitter Adora Anae had quite the offensive weekend for the Utes this past Friday and Saturday in Salt Lake City. Not only did she set new career-high on two separate occasions, but she also managed to register a new school record for kills in a single match.
Anae recorded a new career-high with her 23 kills against Idaho State on Friday and then managed to top that mark with 26 kills against Lipscomb on Saturday. The 26 kills broke a 12-year Utah record - breaking former All-American and Utah Hall of Famer Kim Turner's mark of 25 kills in a single match during the rally-scoring era, which was originally set back on Nov. 15, 2003 against UNLV.
Anae also managed to break Morgan Odale's school record for kills in a four-set match (rally-scoring era only), which she had set with 23 kills back on Nov. 19, 2011, against Washington State.
ANOTHER MARK FOR ANAE
Adora Anae became the first Utah player to record 20 or more kills in a span of three matches since Chelsey Schofield-Olsen did so back in 2011.
Anae tallied 23 kills in Utah's first match against Idaho State on Friday and then posted 26 kills in the third match of the season against Lipscomb. Meanwhile, Schofield-Olsen managed to record 21 kills against Arizona State back on Nov. 12 and then notched 22 kills just two matches later against Washington State on Nov. 19, 2011.
KATOA BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS
Sophomore outside hitter Eliza Katoa, who is coming off a season-ending knee injury in 2014, seems to have picked up right where she left off from last season. The second-year player tallied a pair of double-digit kill efforts this past weekend, notching a career-high 15 kills on Friday and another 13 kills against Lipscomb on Saturday.
Katoa, who led the Utes with nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage in Saturday morning's contest against CSUN, posted a .307 hitting percentage for the weekend.
NEWCOMERS AND REDSHIRT FRESHMEN DEBUT FOR THE UTES
Incoming freshmen Berkeley Oblad, Megan Boudreaux and Megan Shughrou, along with redshirt freshmen Emma Kirst and Caroline Sipiora made their collegiate debuts this past weekend, while junior transfer Madison Legerski made her first appearance as a Ute, as well.
Oblad and Kirst both recorded seven kills each for the Utes in their first-ever matches for Utah on Friday. Oblad followed with five kills and a .455 hitting percentage in match two, while Boudreau totaled three kills and Shughrou tallied three assists and four digs in the same match. Legerski managed to collect one kill and Sipiora total a kill and dig, as well.
Oblad finished the weekend with 15 kills and eight total blocks, while Kirst tallied 18 kills, six digs and five total blocks.
JORGENSEN NOTCHES FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Freshman setter, Jessie Jorgensen - who is coming off a medical redshirt season in 2014 - recorded a career-high 23 kills in Utah's first match on Friday and then posted her first career double-double the next match with 14 assists and match-high 15 digs for the Utes. She concluded the tournament with another 23 kills in Utah's match against Lipscomb on Saturday evening.
UTES FALL OUT OF AVCA TOP-25 POLL
Following a 2-1 weekend, Utah dropped out of this week's AVCA Top-25 Poll. The Utes, who opened the season ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll, did however receive 30 points in the poll, which was released on Monday, Aug. 31.
Utah has been ranked or at least received votes in poll dating back to week No. 11 of last season.
UTES PICKED 10TH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL
The Pac-12 coaches voted Utah to finish 10th overall in the conference this season, according to the preseason poll that was released on Aug. 11.
Stanford received 11 of 12 first-place votes for a total of 121 points to take top honors in this season's poll. Arizona State followed in second with 99 total points, while Washington rounded out the top three spots, earning the league's final first-place vote for a total of 97 points.
Oregon (94 points) was tabbed fourth in the poll and USC (84) was voted fifth. Colorado (61), Arizona (60), UCLA (57) and Oregon State (35) were picked ahead of Utah, while California (28) and Washington State (22) completed the preseason poll, respectively.
ANAE NAMED TO ALL-PAC-12 PRESEASON TEAM
Sophomore outside hitter Adora Anae was one of 14 players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team. She becomes the first Ute player to be named to the preseason squad since Utah joined the conference in 2011. Anae was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection in 2014.
CYGAN CHASES HISTORY
Senior setter Kendall Cygan entered the 2015 campaign ranked No. 7 on Utah's all-time career assists list with 1,864 assists tallied in her first three seasons with the Utes. Cygan, who heads into Tuesday's contest with 1,941 career assists, is now just 369 assists shy from taking over sixth-place (Katie Gesto, 1984-86, 2,309 assists).
