FIRST SERVE
Utah (3-1) returns to non-conference tournament action this weekend with three matches at the Gonzaga Invitational at Martin Centre in Spokane, Wash. Action will get underway on Friday, Sept. 4 with the Utes taking on Montana (2-1) at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. Utah will close out the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 5 with matches against Wyoming (3-0) at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT and Gonzaga (2-1) at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT.

A LOOK AT THE UTES
The Utes improved to 3-1 overall with a four-set win over Utah State on Tuesday. Utah dropped the first set to the Aggies, 25-20, but came back to down the home squad after winning the next three sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-19).
Adora Anae (12 kills, 10 digs) and Jessie Jorgensen (24 assists, 12 digs) both managed to record a double-double in the victory, while Alyssa Koenig and Berkeley Oblad registered new career-highs with nine kills each. Kendall Cygan led the way with 25 assists and Tess Sutton posted a team-high 13 digs, while Koenig notched a match-high eight total blocks.
Utah heads into the weekend with Anae leading the team in kills (70, 4.67/set), while Brenna DeYoung has posted the team's best hitting percentage (.471). Cygan leads the team with 102 assists (6.80/set) and Sutton has a team-high 58 digs (4.14/set) on the year. DeYoung also leads the team at the net with 17 total blocks (1.31/set).
As a team, Utah is hitting .290 with 219 kills (14.60/set), 205 assists (13.67/set), 22 service aces (1.47/set) 223 digs (14.87/set) and 71 total blocks (37.5 team; 2.50/set).
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
The Utes will be seeing a familiar face on the sidelines when they take the court against Montana on Friday, as former Ute assistant coach Brian Doyon has taken the reigns as head coach of the squad. Doyon has led the Grizzlies to a 2-1 record overall this season with wins against Air Force and Northwestern and a loss to New Mexico State.
Montana (6-23 last season) is led offensively by Hannah Sackett's 44 kills (3.67/set) and Capri Richardson's .370 hitting percentage. Rachel DeArman runs the offense and leads the team with 76 assists (6.33/set), while Richardson leads the squad at the net with 10 total blocks (0.83/set). Sadie Ahearn leads all players with 53 digs (4.42/set).
The Grizzlies are hitting .171 as a team while averaging 10.83 kills, 10.25 assists, 13.75 digs and 2.08 blocks on the season.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
Montana brings in an overall record of 3-0 into this weekend's action after picking up wins against No. 14 Ohio State, South Dakota and Butler. Head coach Chad Callihan is 274-156 all-time, while donning a record of 47-21 with the Cowgirls.
Laura Beach and Kayla Slofkiss lead Wyoming with 28 kills each on the season, while Emily Hines has tallied a team-best .304 hitting percentage. In Wyoming's 6-2 system, Courtney Chacon leads the team with 58 assists (5.27) and Dani Westfall follows with 57 assists (5.18). Allison Waldvogel has a team-high 46 digs (4.18) and Reed Copeland has tallied a team-high 21 total blocks (1.91).
As a team, Wyoming has tallied 137 kills (11.42) on .176 hitting, while averaging 10.50 assists, 12.25 digs and 3.29 blocks.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Gonzaga is 2-1 on the year after falling to No. 10 Washington in the season-opener, but following with a pair of wins over Portland State and Boise State. Head coach Dave Gantt is just 61-113 in his time with the Bulldogs, but has a 267-173 career record heading into the weekend.
Savannah Blinn leads the team with 50 kills (4.55/set) and Jordan Gasser has a team-best.295 hitting percentage. Faith Smith leads the squad with 62 assists (5.64/set) and Morgan Douglass has a team-high 36 digs (3.27/set) through the first three matches. Emily Allen leads the team at the net with 14 total blocks (1.27/set).
Gonzaga has tallied 114 kills (13.09/set) on .221 hitting, while averaging 12.36 assists, 13.36 digs and 2.36 blocks.
SERIES HISTORY
The Utes and Grizzlies will meet for the first time since 1993 and just the third time in the Beth Launiere era. The series is tied 8-8, but Montana has won seven straight matches dating back to 1986. Utah's last win over the Grizzlies came back on Sept. 21, 1984, in Bozeman, Mont. Utah is 5-6 all-time when facing the Grizzlies on a neutral court.
Utah leads the all-time series with Wyoming, 28-10, having won five straight dating back to 2008 and 19 of the previous 20 meetings. The Utes won the last contest, sweeping the Cowgirls in straight sets in Laramie, Wyo., back on Nov. 26, 2010. Utah is a perfect 6-0 against Wyoming at neutral sites.
This will mark just the seventh meeting between the Utes and Bulldogs, and the first since 1998, with Utah leading the all-time series 5-1. Utah has won four straight with its only loss coming back on Nov. 13, 1990. The Utes are 2-0 when facing Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
LAUNIERE CLOSES IN ON WIN NO. 500
Utah head coach Beth Launiere is now just six wins shy from earning career win No. 500. The 26-year head coach is 494-304 all-time following Utah's victory over Utah State on Tuesday.
All 494 of her career wins have been recorded at Utah since she took over the program in 1990. During that stretch, Launiere has tallied 15, 20-win seasons, which included 21 victories in 2013 and 20 wins last season.
ANAE ON THE ATTACK
Adora Anae posted another double-digit kill effort in Utah's win at Utah State on Tuesday. The sophomore registered 10+ kills for the third time this season after leading the Utes with 12 kills in the match.
Anae has recorded double-digit kills in three of the four matches this season and nine of the previous 12 dating back to last season.
ANAE SETS NEW MARK FOR KILLS
Adora Anae registered 26 kills against Lipscomb back on Aug. 29, setting a new school record in the process. Anae broke former All-American and Utah Hall of Famer Kim Turner's 12-year mark of 25 kills in a single match during the rally-scoring era, that had been originally set by Turner back on Nov. 15, 2003 against UNLV.
Anae also managed to break Morgan Odale's school record for kills in a four-set match (rally-scoring era only), which she had set with 23 kills back on Nov. 19, 2011, against Washington State.
KOENIG COLLECTS CAREER HIGHS AT UTAH STATE
Junior middle blocker Alyssa Koenig had the best statistical match of her career this past Tuesday, recording new career highs in kills (9), attacks (16), aces (1), digs (3) and total blocks (3). She ranked second on the team with a .500 hitting percentage, while leading the team with her eight total blocks, which also ranks as the high mark for a Utah player this season.
DEYOUNG IMPRESSES IN LOGAN
Senior Brenna DeYoung recorded a new career-high seven kills on just 11 attack attempts to lead the Utes with a .545 hitting percentage against the Aggies on Tuesday. The Ute middle blocker set a new career-high mark for total blocks, as well, registering one solo block and five block assists on the evening.
BLOCK U
Utah out-blocked the Aggies on Tuesday, totaling 27 total blocks (1 solo, 26 assisted) to Utah State's eight total blocks (0 solo, 8 assisted). The Utes tallied seven total blocks and the Aggies were held without a single block in the first two sets of the match. Utah State did manage to get six block assists in the third set, but when the set was over, Utah was still out-blocking the opposition 18-6.
UTES ON THE OFFENSIVE
Utah has four different players with at least 20 kills and another two players just one kill away from 20 kills on the season. Adora Anae leads all players with her 70 kills on the season and sophomore Eliza Katoa is second on the team with 44 kills. Freshman Emma Kirst has tallied 26 kills and freshman Berkeley Oblad follows with 24 kills. Sophomore Carly Trueman and senior Brenna DeYoung are just one kill away from the 20-kill mark, as both players have tallied 19 kills each.
UTES RECEIVE VOTES IN LATEST AVCA TOP-25 POLL
Following a 2-1 weekend, Utah dropped out of this week's AVCA Top-25 Poll. The Utes, who opened the season ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll, did however receive 30 points in the poll, which was released on Monday, Aug. 31.
Utah has been ranked or at least received votes in poll dating back to week No. 11 of last season.
UTES PICKED 10TH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL
The Pac-12 coaches voted Utah to finish 10th overall in the conference this season, according to the preseason poll that was released on Aug. 11.
Stanford received 11 of 12 first-place votes for a total of 121 points to take top honors in this season's poll. Arizona State followed in second with 99 total points, while Washington rounded out the top three spots, earning the league's final first-place vote for a total of 97 points.
Oregon (94 points) was tabbed fourth in the poll and USC (84) was voted fifth. Colorado (61), Arizona (60), UCLA (57) and Oregon State (35) were picked ahead of Utah, while California (28) and Washington State (22) completed the preseason poll, respectively.
ANAE NAMED TO ALL-PAC-12 PRESEASON TEAM
Sophomore outside hitter Adora Anae was one of 14 players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team. She becomes the first Ute player to be named to the preseason squad since Utah joined the conference in 2011. Anae was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection in 2014.
CYGAN CHASES HISTORY
Senior setter Kendall Cygan entered the 2015 campaign ranked No. 7 on Utah's all-time career assists list with 1,864 assists tallied in her first three seasons with the Utes. Cygan, who heads into Tuesday's contest with 1,941 career assists, is now just 369 assists shy from taking over sixth-place (Katie Gesto, 1984-86, 2,309 assists).
UTES ON THE PAC-12 NETWORK
Utah will have 13 of its 31 regular-season matches aired live on the Pac-12 Network in 2015. Home contests scheduled to be televised include: BYU (Sept. 17), Colorado (Sept. 23), UCLA (Oct. 9), Stanford (Oct. 16), Oregon (Oct. 30), Oregon State (Nov. 1) and Arizona (Nov. 12).
Road matches scheduled to be televised live include: at Oregon State (Oct. 2), at Arizona State (Oct. 23), at Arizona (Oct. 25), at USC (Nov. 8), at Stanford (Nov. 20) and at Colorado (Nov. 27).
A LOOK AHEAD
Utah will continue non-conference tournament action next weekend with a trip to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Louisville/Active Ankle Challenge.
The Utes will face tournament host Louisville on Friday, Sept. 11 (7:30 p.m. ET) then follow with matches against Ohio (12 p.m. ET) and Seton Hall (5:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday, Sept. 12.
