SALT LAKE CITY - With three meets of the 2015 season under their belts, Utah head cross country coach Kyle Kepler is pleased with the early progression of the team.
"I feel like we are making progress," Kepler said. "The kids that I thought would be shining so far are and that is good. I think that we have a core group of kids that have gotten better. Our freshmen keep getting better and some of the kids who redshirted last year, because of injury or whatever reason, are all progressing nicely. That is the most important thing, that there is progress across the board."
Kepler is most pleased with how the team has been able to maintain their health so far this season.
"We have everybody available if we need them," Kepler explained. "That is not the norm for most cross country teams. Usually by now, you have a few kids who are banged up and not able to run, but we've got everybody available and that's exciting. I think that allows us to put more attention and focus into cross country."
Kepler credits his new assistant distance coach,
Mackenzie Wartenberger, as well as the rest of the cross country support staff for the team's success in remaining healthy.
"Mackenzie adds another set of eyes to our coaching staff and that also helps us put more attention and focus into cross country," Kepler said. "We also have great athletic training, nutrition and strength staffs. Everybody is just working really well together right now and I think that is a huge benefit to our student athletes and one of the key reasons why we are A-getting better, and B-staying healthy doing it."
The Utes have three meets remaining to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 30. Utah will travel to South Bend, Ind. on Oct. 2 to compete against some of the top teams in the country at the Notre Dame Invitational.
