SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Utah senior middle blocker Brenna DeYoung has been named the Pac-12 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
DeYoung showcased her best defensive performance at the net for the Utes this past week, collecting a solo block and 29 block assists for a total of 30 blocks, while helping guide Utah to a 3-1 record in four matches.
The Tooele native tied a career-high with six total blocks in Utah's 3-1 win against Utah State last Tuesday, but just a few days later she would set a new career-high, opening the Gonzaga Invitational with seven total blocks in a 3-1 win over Montana. DeYoung posted another six-block effort in a loss to Wyoming on Saturday morning, but then countered with a career-high 11 total blocks in a five-set thriller against Gonzaga later that evening.
For the week, DeYoung tallied 20 kills (1.25/set) while hitting at a clip of .229, to go along with a pair of assists, three service aces and three digs. She averaged a team-high 1.88 blocks-per-set and registered 2.41 points-per-set, as well.
DeYoung becomes the fifth Ute to earn Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and eighth player in school history to earn a Pac-12 weekly award. She is the first defensive selection since Bailey Bateman took home the same award back on Sept. 15, 2014.
USC's Samantha Bricio took home Offensive Player of the Week honors for a second straight week and Oregon's Lindsey Vander Weide was tabbed this week's Freshman of the Week.
The Utes return to action later this week with three matches at the Louisville Invitational. Utah will open the tournament against the Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 11, with a first serve set for 7:30 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. MT).
