FIRST SERVE
Utah (5-2) will close out non-conference tournament play this weekend with three matches at the Louisville/Active Ankle Challenge at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, Ky.
The Utes will open-up play on Friday, Sept. 11, against tournament host Louisville (2-3) at 7:30 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. MT). Utah will close the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, facing Ohio (5-2) at 12 p.m. ET (10 a.m. MT) and Seton Hall (4-2) at 5:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. MT).

A LOOK AT THE UTES
The Utes moved to 5-2 overall on the season after going 2-1 this past weekend at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane, Wash. Utah defeated Montana in four sets (19-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday, then followed with a four-set loss to Wyoming (26-28, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25) on Saturday before claiming a five-set win over Gonzaga (19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-5) later that evening.
Utah snapped a 15-match winning streak against teams on a neutral court with its loss to Wyoming. It was Utah's first loss since falling 3-0 to North Carolina in Davis, Calif., back on Sept. 1, 2012. Utah did however move to a perfect 2-0 in true road games with its victory over Gonzaga.
Utah heads into the weekend hitting .259 as a team, while averaging 13.82 kills, 13.07 assists, 1.68 service aces, 14.43 digs and 2.70 blocks per set.
UTE LEADERS
Sophomore Adora Anae heads into the weekend leading Utah in kills (120) and kills-per-set (4.29), while sophomore Carly Trueman has tallied a team-best .491 hitting percentage. Senior Kendall Cygan leads the team with 182 assists and 6.50 assists-per-set, while redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen follows with 144 assists and 5.14 assists-per-set. Cygan also leads the team with 10 service aces on the year.
Defensively, the Utes are led in the back row by Tess Sutton, who has tallied a team-high 99 digs and 3.67 digs-per-set. Senior Brenna DeYoung leads Utah at the net with 41 total blocks and a 1.64 blocks-per-set average.
DeYOUNG TABBED PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brenna DeYoung set a new career high with 11 total blocks, accounting for nearly a third of the team's 34 blocks, leading the Utes to a 3-2 win over Gonzaga. The senior middle blocker had at least six total blocks in all four matches last week, helping the team to wins over Utah State (3-1), Montana (3-1) and the Zags. For the week, DeYoung averaged 1.25 kills, 1.88 blocks and 2.41 points per set. It is DeYoung's first-ever weekly honor, and Utah's sixth all-time honoree.
LAUNIERE CLOSES IN ON WIN NO. 500
Utah head coach Beth Launiere is now just four wins shy from earning career win No. 500. The 26-year head coach is 496-305 all-time following a 2-1 record at the Gonzaga Invitational this past weekend.
All 496 of her career wins have been recorded at Utah since she took over the program in 1990. During that stretch, Launiere has tallied 15, 20-win seasons, which included 21 victories in 2013 and 20 wins last season.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Louisville is 2-3 on the season after going 0-2 in home matches this past weekend. The Cardinals went 2-1 to open the season, picking up a pair of wins over Creighton and Miami (Ohio) at the Illinois Invitational, but then dropped both matches this past Friday and Saturday to Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Erin Fairs leads Louisville with 84 kills and 4.00 kills-per-set, while Tess Clark has tallied a team-high .343 hitting percentage. Katie George leads the team with 234 assists (11.14/set) and Molly Sauer has posted a team-high 82 digs (3.90/set) on the year. Maggie DeJong leads the team at the net with 20 total blocks (0.95/set), but Clark follows right behind her with 19 total blocks (0.90/set).
The Cards are hitting .216 as a team, while averaging 13.05 kills, 12.48 assists, 15.48 digs and 2.14 blocks.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Ohio is 5-2 on the season after going 2-1 in Athens, Ohio, this past weekend. The Bobcats collected wins over LSU and Xavier before falling in five sets to Michigan on Saturday. Ohio defeated then No. 10-ranked Kentucky on the road, back on Sept. 1.
Jaime Kosiorek leads the team offensively with 91 kills (3.50/set), while Abby Gilleland has tallied a team-high 264 assists (10.15/set) and 10 service aces for the Bobcats. Meredith Ashy has a team-high 145 digs (5.58/set) and Karin Bull leads all players with 26 total blocks (1.00/set).
The Bobcats are hitting .178 as a team, while averaging 12.12 kills, 11.54 assists, 17.38 digs and 1.37 blocks this season.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
Seton Hall is 4-2 on the season and on a current three-match win streak after taking all three matches this past weekend. The Pirates posted wins over Notre Dame, Hofstra and Temple in South Orange, N.J.
The Pirates are led offensively by Cherise Hennigan's team-leading 66 kills (3.00/set) and Sophia Coffey's team-high 217 assists (9.86/set). Defensively, the team is led by Tessa Fournier with 103 digs (4.68/set) and Abby Thelen, who has tallied a team-high 20 total blocks (0.91/set).
Seton Hall is hitting .196 as a team, while averaging 12.82 kills, 12.18 assists, 15.18 digs and 1.77 blocks.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday will mark just the third meeting between the Utes and Cardinals, with the all-time series deadlocked at one win apiece. The two teams have not faced each other since 2001, with the Cards sweeping Utah in Tucson, Ariz. Utah's win came back in 1998 - a 3-1 victory in Pullman, Wash.
Utah is 1-0 all-time against Ohio, with the only meeting between the two teams coming back in 2003. The Utes won in straight sets over the Bobcats in Tempe, Ariz.
Saturday's match between the Pirates and Utes will be the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
KATOA NAMED TO GONZAGA INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Sophomore Eliza Katoa was named to all-tournament team following her three-match performance at the Gonzaga Invitational. Katoa tallied nine kills in Utah's win over Montana and then posted the first double-double of her career, while notching new career-highs in kills (17) and digs (16) against Wyoming. She closed out the tournament with another 17 kills and nine digs against the Zags.
TRUEMAN NOTCHES BEST OFFENSIVE NUMBERS
Sophomore Carly Trueman was back in action this past weekend and she came up big for the Utes in Utah's five-set win over Gonzaga on Saturday. Trueman tallied a career-high 14 kills on 17 attempts and did not record a hitting error on the way to a career-best .824 hitting percentage in the match. The second-year player also tallied a season-high five blocks in the victory.
CYGAN JOINS 2,000 ASSIST CLUB
Senior Kendall Cygan became just the seventh player in school history to record at least 2,000 career assists when she posted 28 assists in Utah's match against Wyoming this past Saturday. The four-year veteran currently ranks seventh all-time with 2,046 career assists with the Utes.
Cygan, who heads into Friday's contest with 2,046 career assists, is now just 264 assists shy from taking over sixth-place (Katie Gesto, 1984-86, 2,309 assists) on Utah's all-time assists list.
UTES IN NON-CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT PLAY
Utah is 4-2 in tournament action this season after going 2-1 in the Utah Classic and recording the same mark at the Gonzaga Invitational. The Utes are 30-13 in tournament-play dating back to 2010 season.
BLOCK U
The Utes tallied a season-high 17.5 total team blocks in its win over Gonzaga on Saturday. Utah, who was led by Brenna DeYoung's 11 total blocks, had one solo block and 33 block assists on the evening.
The 17.5 total team blocks are the most since registering 20.0 blocks against Arizona back on Oct. 27, 2013.
UTES ON THE OFFENSIVE
Utah has seven players with at least 20 kills on the season. Sophomore Adora Anae leads the way with 120 kills, while fellow sophomore Eliza Katoa follows with 87 kills on the season. Players with at least 30 kills on the season include Berkeley Oblad 939), Carly Trueman (35), Brenna DeYoung (32) and Emma Kirst (32). Alyssa Koenig rounds out the group with 20 kills on the year.
UTES PICKED 10TH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON POLL
The Pac-12 coaches voted Utah to finish 10th overall in the conference this season, according to the preseason poll that was released on Aug. 11.
Stanford received 11 of 12 first-place votes for a total of 121 points to take top honors in this season's poll. Arizona State followed in second with 99 total points, while Washington rounded out the top three spots, earning the league's final first-place vote for a total of 97 points.
Oregon (94 points) was tabbed fourth in the poll and USC (84) was voted fifth. Colorado (61), Arizona (60), UCLA (57) and Oregon State (35) were picked ahead of Utah, while California (28) and Washington State (22) completed the preseason poll, respectively.
ANAE NAMED TO ALL-PAC-12 PRESEASON TEAM
Sophomore outside hitter Adora Anae was one of 14 players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team. She becomes the first Ute player to be named to the preseason squad since Utah joined the conference in 2011. Anae was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection in 2014.
CYGAN CHASES HISTORY
Senior setter Kendall Cygan entered the 2015 campaign ranked No. 7 on Utah's all-time career assists list with 1,864 assists tallied in her first three seasons with the Utes. Cygan, who heads into Tuesday's contest with 1,941 career assists, is now just 369 assists shy from taking over sixth-place (Katie Gesto, 1984-86, 2,309 assists).
UTES ON THE PAC-12 NETWORK
Utah will have 13 of its 31 regular-season matches aired live on the Pac-12 Network in 2015. Home contests scheduled to be televised include: BYU (Sept. 17), Colorado (Sept. 23), UCLA (Oct. 9), Stanford (Oct. 16), Oregon (Oct. 30), Oregon State (Nov. 1) and Arizona (Nov. 12).
Road matches scheduled to be televised live include: at Oregon State (Oct. 2), at Arizona State (Oct. 23), at Arizona (Oct. 25), at USC (Nov. 8), at Stanford (Nov. 20) and at Colorado (Nov. 27).
A LOOK AHEAD
Utah returns home next week to host BYU, as part of the Deseret First Duel Rivalry series next Thursday, Sept. 17. It will mark the 88th meeting between the two teams. Since the Deseret First Duel Rivalry series began in 2007, the series is tied 6-6.
The Utes will have next weekend off following its match against BYU and will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, to open Pac-12 play at home against Colorado.
